Illumitex NeoSol DS is a great light. I wouldn't recommend growing with straight LED lights. My company has found that a hybrid light system gets the most out of the LED that you can get. If you are interested in going to an LED based grow shoot me an email. I specialize in getting rebates for growers who are going energy efficient. The rebates will get you started at 1/4 of the start up cost and 1/3 of the running cost. It is a great way to grow great product at a cheaper energy cost. If you have questions or are interested shoot me an email at [email protected]. Look up the Illumitex light... Cheapest I have found online is $2,000. With a good rebate I can get it to you for $150.

Interesting stuff. What kind of certifications does a light need to have to qualify for certain rebates? Just generally speaking, not talking about illumitex or anyone specifically. I am just curious what qualifies...I'm sure there are different levels...? I would like to hear it from you since you do it.

And just a heads up...1st post advertising...mods will be here quick. Ease your way in first. Saying led's can't hang on there own, isn't going to get you a welcoming party either. But that is a different topic.
I want to hear more about these rebates. I'm in CA, but it's just a matter of time till we are on the level(legally at least) that they rec states are. So I want to get prepared and they will probably model it after CO and WA. Thanks

Anything under 1000 watts qualifies for a rebate. Each energy district is different in how much they have set aside for the rebate. Some rebates are going to be larger than others it all depends on how much they are willing to pay for each kilowatt per hour saved.

from what i know you can save probably around $100 or more per fixture if you decide to DIY depending on who you purchase the light from. some of the better premade units are by Area 51, RapidLED, BML horticulture, lumigrow, bonasiahero / hans, and Advanced. from my understanding the more watts per diode, the better results. as you can see in the discussion above, people are moving towards the COB (chips on board) design now instead of individual diodes. they seem to give you more lumens for your dollar than buying individual LEDs. check out the COBs fom bridgelux and CREE
Is that the XHP50 and XHP70 from Cree?

Ok so tax returns are looming and i have money to spend on upgrading my CFLs, i do not want to go MH/HPS route because of space and heat issues so my next option is LED.

What is the best LED for the price? Im looking to spend around $300 dollars. My CFLs right now produce around 350w so of course it would have to be worth it watt wise. Or i could always run them together correct?

thanks to anyone that can help, also if you could provide links that would be very helpful also

edit: so as i am researching more my 300$ budget doesnt look like its going to cover it. $300 gets me ~100w LED, which seems like a lot of money. I could get 100w of CFLs for 30 dollars.

I don't understand why anyone uses CFL today when Cree LED lightbulbs are available at Home Depot for about the same price. (60w equiv, 9.5w actual for $6-$7.). CFLs produce 60-70 lumens per watt. These LEDs are in the 90-100 range.

That's just a starting point. You can get more l/w by spending more money on higher-efficiency LED. An expensive, high-efficiency LED fixture may not be right for you. The cost may not be worth the electricity savings. But, even if you stay with CFLs, you can do better for the money.
