How can I quiet inline fans?

So I thought I was gonna be Mr. Cool and make these boxes to put my fans in and now found out last night I don't have enough space so I'm thinking about putting a 2x4 across the ceiling and hanging then with bungee cords. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts on this thank you in advance I appreciate all the help. Also should the carbon filter be up towards the top or does it matter?

doesn't matter where you put filter in room, you can get a silencer or make one. I went to home depot and got a 6 in flue pipe and sprayed the inside with expandable foam, stuck it on top of fan/filter, walla, half the noise for about $10

Are you using a speed controler? I just switched from a Speedster type to a Variac. Made a huge difference. Morso than the duct muffler in my particular application.

Awesome idea thank you what were the dimensions on the pipe and did you just coat it or go crazy and hollow it out?

I've seen a lot of photos of people hanging fans by bungee cords and never got it. I guess their fans weren't balanced very well?

All of my noise issues have been from high air velocity, not a shaking fan.

Hang the fans from a strap. Use rubber washers where straps contact wall/celing. Just keeps some of the sound from traveling through your home. I use the insulated duct from lowes and I use a 6" fan full speed and can barely hear a sound. I also have a Variac speed controller in case I need to tone it down. The insualted duct does a shit ton for silencing fans.

Thanks I'm in the process of making a silencer right now. I'm just working with a pretty small space so trying to get everything set up to be right before the beans even meet the soil lol. I'm using the bungee straps to hold my fans up and got the controllers too so by the end of today I should have both fans up and running. Thanks again for your feedback truly appreciated.

So today has been going pretty good got both my fans hooked up and running they are pretty quiet so I'm going to roll with it just got a couple more things to do and a quick once over clean up and I'll be ready to start germing my seeds tomorrow on the full moon ( allegedly best time to germ) So I'm pretty excited about being this close to turning the key lol.
