water filter for well

can I use something like this to filter well water In-the-Grille, Turn Cyst Refrigerator Water Filter

or would I have to spend a lot more money on something better to be of any use? my water tastes normal, but I think it could be better for doing hydroponics. I'll probably start out using gallons of water from the store for my first grow, but I'd like to find something more permanent. what about a cheap whole house filter? what works for filtering well water?

When you find something cheap, let us know. Whole house systems that take care of the minerals (our biggest problem) just aren't cheap.

We already have something very similar to that installed. Doesn't do shit for pulling the minerals that ruin plumbing (or make growing a bit more difficult). What I've been doing, until we get a whole house filtration system, is using the PUR water filter. I've got a ghetto set-up, with the filter cartridge installed in its blue pitcher top, that's resting on, I shit you not, an angelfood cake pan, that's resting on top of a container to catch the water. However, as soon as I can, I'm going to cannibalize one of those Mr. Clean filtration units, the ones from the carwashing kit.

something similar crossed my mind, but I dismissed it and moved on to looking for a better solution. I guess anything better would be pretty pricey. I might try building something like this. mount a fitting to the bottom of the container to drain the clean water into a holding tank. have an electronic float in the holding tank to turn on the system when it gets low. an electronic solenoid water valve connected to the float to turn on the water on, and some kind of cheap valve to turn it down to a slow drip into the filter. most of the parts, I already salvaged out of a junk dish washer in my shed. just need the PUR filter which I can pick up at walmart today.

but how good of a filter is that? at least with the PUR filter, you know for sure it's drinkable quality

Alright, a couple of quick shots. We have it hooked up into the line that runs from the pressure tank on the well to the house, it's the main line.

It's an excellent filter. With PUR they're also worried about organisms, Giardia and the like, not just particulate matter or minerals. Mr. Clean is addressing mineral and particulates, and with their system you do not dry off the vehicle, you let it air dry. If you've done it right (the washing and rinsing procedure) you will get virtually no spots. Spots equal some water hardness, yeah?

looks like it works great! someone has tested it with 387ppm tap water and 15ppm after filtered. great solution

sweet! this is to good of an idea/deal. I know I'm not stoned right now, but am I dreaming maybe? $15 at walmart for the kit. the one guy on the other thread was right, the filter that comes with the kit is smaller. it handles 3 car washes, the refill is 10. but, they also test filtered about 50 gallons of water and the filter was still working just fine. replacement filter is only $6.

Yeah, $15-$20 or so. We use it for our motorcycles, and it is the fucking BOMB. Didn't believe it til I used it. And they are not kidding when they say do NOT touch the vehicle while it's drying. Let it be, it comes out spotless. How easy is that?
