There is no 'book' about backwards hermis. He mentioned it a few times in a few articles and interviews and his book about breeding. And what he's said is pretty clear;

The quote you selected from his book on breeding;
"Backward" hermorphidites are males that eventually sport female flowers (as opposed to the usual female to male hermorphodites). These are rare occurrences, usually sterile but sometimes viable, that I found to be genetically valuable. Many resinous and desireable males exhibit this trait, which almost guarantees against unwanted homeomorphism in subsequent generations as it also increases the female to male ratio in it's progeny."

And what he's said about his genetic line, which is as follows;
"Originally, in the late 1970's, I was growing up to 100 plants at a time using over 1000 watts of light, and also outdoors in a backyard garden space. These were all land race sativa that fortunately cloned well. The ratio of highly desirable individuals from these plants was about 1:100. One of the most annoying traits of these varieties was hermaphroditism. Approximately 60% of all of these plants from seed were unmanageable hermis, and about 25% more were what I referred to as manageable hermaphrodites, meaning that with close observation and intense scrutiny the male pods could be seen and eliminated as they appeared. About 15% of these sativa plants were female enough to produce marketable sinsimilla bud, with a constant vigilance toward the occasional stray pollen sack. In other words the hermaphroditism expressed in these equatorial sativa was extreme and nearly total.

A quick word about the virtues of hermaphrodites: Ask any old-time herbalist, one who has been experiencing fine herb since at least the early 1970's, what their favorite all-time herbal variety was, and the answer will be something to the effect of; “Santa Marta or Acapulco Gold” or “Highland or Chocolate Thai” or “Punta Roya (red-tipped gold Highland Oaxacan)” or “Guerran Green” or “Panama Red” etc. et. al., all of which were equatorial, or sub-tropical, origin sativa and hermaphroditic. Even the great hashish of the era such as Lebanese Red and Blonde, all Moroccan and Nepalese were produced from seeded stock."

But nowhere has Dj directly mentioned working with these types of "backwards hermis." If Im mistaken, please feel free to correct me.

And Im not sure what you paid for or how much you paid, but Im sorry you feel you paid too much and didn't find what you wanted, better luck next time.
OMG the BOOK isnt about backwards hermies.... there is a quote from his book about backwards hermies and also all over the internet....
But yeah, also a fact DJ Short lost the 2nd set of blueberry parents in 2010.

.....nope...not a fact. And THAT'S a fact. Dj has been using the same mother and father plants for over a decade. Where are you getting your info from? You sure seem determined in spreading the word that you don't like Dj's work. Why would someone go through so much effort to express that they didn't like something? Usually people talk about what they like....so...which seed company do you work for...?

...and I ass-u-me that you're the same person using the 'King Arthur' account? Cute.

This is #7 and will be culled out from this grow journal from this point on. It's a male that's auto-flowering at 18/6. I'm not feeling confident enough in my abilities to work an auto-flowering male into my breeding program at this time. Of course I can't just throw away 20+ year old genetics. This boy will find a home somewhere, but these will most likely be the last pictures I'll be posting of him. SDC18037.JPGSDC18038.JPG SDC18039.JPG

This is #6, another boy. Im vegging him out now to toss in my flower room with another copy of the #3. He's one of five boys out of 6 seedlings. I'll be using this plant to pollinate the only female I got from these seeds. I'll also be pollinating another copy of the same female with pollen from the #8 PFK. I'll try both of these males to see which one produces nicer offspring. Both of these crosses will be inbred. But because I don't know the actual attributes of the genetic line in question I can't say for certain what genetic traits I will be reinforcing aside form the label the seeds were given which was PFK for purple, fruity, and kush.

So far the female, #3 has an earthen berry and cocoa aroma. It smells more like cocoa than any other strain I've ever smelled. The #8 (boy) has a skunk, spice and cedar incense smell. And this plant, the #6 (boy), was my first pick based on smell. It smelled of sweet candy berry. My intuition tells me that the #6 is gonna make a better cross. Also, I'll probably be crossing the #3 with other forms of pollen as well just to see what male performs the best with it. Ideally I'd like to offer seeds of this genetic line at some point so I'll play around with the males to see which ones make the best seeds. I'm considering using the f4 Blueberry stretch indica father on the #3 at some point as well as one of the f-13 boys I have. I'll just keep trying things until I find something that I feel makes a good cross. But who knows where things will end up. There really are so many possibilities at this point.SDC18042.JPG SDC18043.JPG SDC18041.JPG

This is the #1 (boy) and the most mutated of the 6 plants I got. I'm just kind of hanging on to it for a rainy day or some point when I can figure out what I'd like to do with it. SDC18048.JPGSDC18049.JPG

I'll try to get some pics of #3 (the female) in a bit when the lights come on. I had to take her to another location where I was storing the #8 boy to pollinate her and she suffered some trauma during the travel and may not be the most photogenic tonight but I will attempt to document her progress nonetheless.

This is another back-stock Dj Short seed. I may as well toss this in this journal. I'm not certain of the filial generation (I assume 3rd or 4th) or how old the genetics are because it was passed on to me from another member of a collective I participate in. I assume it's as well 20+ years old. It has the label 'F-K 3/4' (the letters stand for either fruity and or floral and kind and or kush). I was told it grows like the Flo and smokes like the Blueberry. I currently have another copy of her flowering in another location and will keep pictures updated with this journal. I am also considering and will most likely pollinate this plant with the PFK #6. In the pictures here she's about 4.5 weeks along in veg. I'll attempt to get pictures of her in flower within a few days.
Enjoy!

Neato to find an auto flower trait in the genetic hoard! I would personally love to play with him and breed him with some other autos.

Not the platform for this but.....

JD Short, (probably isn't the real DJ Short but if you want to play him then....)

Your beans are over priced garbage! Like seriously, I would pop Reggie bag seed in search of better genetics than run your insanely expensive ditch weed again. Serious.

I have run your true blueberry and your infamous blueberry.

Both had germination problems and the ones I got to stick around where finicky and unhealthy. Just shit.

Not impressed. And this is not growers error.

Your beans sucked.

And You aren't even the REAL DJShort!!!
Waste...

Not the problem Abe.

Nice passive aggressive comment/assumption. Fuck yourself.

Maybe I got a bad batch of beans. Both runs.

I am not Dj Short, nor have I ever claimed to be. I am Jd Short, his son.

I just completed a germination test on the Whitaker Blues and Flo and got 100% germination success on both and tested out 160 Blueberry at the end of last year and got above 95% success rate on those. This was from 2014 stock and all back-stock Blueberry, Flo, Whitaker Blues, Azure Haze and Vaniluna tested out at the same rates.

Im not sure what region the seeds in question are coming from or what they're going through to get to where they're going, but when they leave Dj Short's Old World Genetics they test out at 95% germination and better, typically 99% and better.

And as far as the finickiness, that's to be expected when growing heirloom compared to hybrid. These strains don't grow like your typical hybrid. And if you expect them to and treat them as if they will you're gonna get finicky results. The same would be said about heirloom tomatoes compared to hybrid tomatoes. But we all know how much better heirloom tomatoes taste, right?

Im sorry you thought the beans you got sucked, thankfully it's a big world and there's lots of beans out there to choose from, right? Maybe try ordering them from somewhere else next time. And out of curiosity, where did you order the bunk beans in question from? Maybe it would be nice to let others know which seed company you are ordering form that sold you bunk beans. I know you didn't get them from Dj because True Blueberry is an offering that hasn't been around through Dj Short's Old World Genetics since...well, a long time if ever. If I remember correctly it was an offering through Spice Of Life Seeds. And coincidently, if I'm not mistaken it's a strain that's been out of stock for well over several years, so I doubt any seed company offering them has authentic Dj Short seeds either.

I sincerely hope you find what you're looking for.

Better luck next time.

I like this thread... even with all the bs between the actual content. Gives a nice inside look at how proper selective breeding should be done, lots of stuff I can learn from. Honestly, I dont really know about the history of dj short and his genetics but from what I can tell you're running a pretty damn professional op and you know what you're doing... that's all I care about

Thank you. I'll take the complement. I don't feel very professional, but I feel like with all the hands on I'm getting that maybe I'm learning how to be. ;)

Thank you for the informative response! Really.

I was tired last night and not in a good mood. Shit happens, my bad.

But, I also spent a lot of money running you and your dad's genes. I was excited from what I heard and was completely disappointed.

Also, Single seed centre is selling DJ Short true blueberry as I type this.......they dropped the price from 33/ to 26/. Maybe people were complaining ..

So, they ARE being sold still and they ARE representing your name.
