I Need to Vent (attic or outside)

Yo,

issues in a closet grow tent. The heat is about that of a 400w-600w HID. Temps are now but it is going to warm up with spring and summer. Directly above the closet is the attic. One of the sides of the closet up against an exterior wall (masonite.)

My question is should I vent to the attic or outside? It would be easiest to just go straight up, but would the heat melt the snow on the roof in winter?

I could also vent into a hallway closet or the living room. I don't really want to put a vent in the living room though as my two renters might ask questions.

if it is your own attic, not a shared attic with another dwelling, i would use the attic as long as the attic has a passive vent of some kind, or you may make your entire house hot as fuck.

Yeah, detached single family dwelling. The attic does have some passive vents under the eaves/fascia.
Edit. I'd like to put the fan up there too for noise reduction. I guess a separate hole for the power cord would be needed.

If you can, this is what I found works best for me in that situation. I would go straight into the attic and run your exhaust duct right up to those passive vents. If you have a filter no worries on smell and it won't make your roof warm if your worried about that. I've vented into an attic from a tent, then out of the attic through the passive vents with a 4inch pushing it out.

vent tho the attic to the overhang of the roof and dump it out that ........it would look like a normal venting from a bathroom or something .....using standard ducting so part of the heat bleeds off to the attic

Attic it is then!
Its a 2x7 closet so hopefully there won't be any 2x4s or support beams directly above. I will check tomorrow.

Yes, you will want to put the fan up there sucking the air from the room, that is the exact setup i have done every time. Good luck

That's exactly what I was gonna do but my operation is so small with one plant in a stealth speaker box so it woulda been overkill. But let me know how yours goes in case I up my hobby in the future

Run it into attic, but directly to a roof vent, in winter you do not want to vent moist air into your cold attic unless you want an attic full of mold.

How are you supposed to cover sound and smell from a roof vent dumbass?

The filter is in the tent. I'm currently running a 4" 167 cfm centrifugal with a variac speed controller. I also have a 8" 900 cfm I'm thinking of using instead -could probably have the speed set to very low. The Phresh filter is also rated about 167 cfm.

the smell is controlled tho the carbon filter on the front of the extraction.......some of the heat will bleed off into the attic before it dumped out ......as for sound on the roof so that is at least 10/20 mph faster winds (every 20 ft in height the wind speed increases by 10 miles so if the ground is 6 a 1 story roof would be 16 a 2 story house would be 26

if he can go out the roof like that only thing to worry about is the snow melt where the air blows .......try to keep it near other vents......a bare spot there is less noticeable
this is why i said use the roof overhang no snow melt

I have a 3rd story balcony that I smoke on EVERYDAY, you're saying with that math, that if there is any wind at ground level; it would be physically impossible to light a Bic. (3rd story balcony = 30ish feet as its built on a mountain side should constantly have winds of 30+ MPH) A slight breeze of about 5mph would prevent an average lighter from working. Either you're making shit up or you know some scientific principle that is previously undiscovered.

THERE IS NO "CONSTANT BREEZE" OVER OR THROUGH A ROOF!

now if u want u can make it a long section of ducting or a short one
(long ducting will slow the speed of the air coming out along with bleed off more heat)

drill a hole /cut a hole so this goes in u mount it from the outside and then u can end the ducting to that ..........it will dump out up there and look like a vent from a bathroom
