plugged in my 357 mag today after quite a few moons to realise that it is louder then 3-4 a51 panels, anyone reckon it would be possible to put in silent fans and still keep the heat down? this much noise for 357w nearly isn't worth it.... kinda just wanted the extra reds lol

If you can ID the fans and make sure the replacement is equal or greater it would solve the problem... probably void the warranty too.

Replacing the cheap fans with high-end fans (you could spend a bucket of money on Noctuas) is unlikely to make much difference. Most of the noise is probly because they're spinning so fast.

From the manufacturer's viewpoint, big heavy heatsinks are expensive. It costs nothing to just spin the fans really hard.

The A-51's undoubtedly use higher quality fans. But I'm sure the biggest factor noise-wise is that the A-51's fans are spinning much more slowly than the Magnum's. A-51 can do that because they used more heatsink material. But the critical difference is A-51 bought efficient diodes that make much less heat than the epi-whatevers in the Magnum.

Your noisy fans aren't just noisy fans. They're noisy because of the decisions that were made at every step of the Magnum design process.

No, agreed, don't throw it away. I don't know anything about the Magnums first-hand. Do you have any control over LED intensity? If so, do the fans ramp up & down along with the lights? Perhaps the simplest, cheapest work-around would be to give up on the highest intensity(ies) and just run it low & slow. I know, that's not a satisfying answer.

Another thing to do is tear into the Magnum and see if everything I said (or some of it anyway) is wrong. Maybe there would be noticeable improvement with better quality fans. First off, I'd suggest getting one of those little IR heat-sensing guns and mapping out how hot (and where) the Magnum gets. Are the Magnum fans just run-of-the-mill PC fans? Do you know anybody who likes to repair computers? Most guys who mess with PC's end up with a box of fans layin' around.

Or maybe you could blow lots of air across the Magnum with a small room fan and slow down the Magnum fans with resistors or small fan controllers. That would definitely void the warranty...
