That is a baby hippo lollol wtf is that creature?!
I haven't tried this yet, but my next grow I will be giving it a shot.. I'm going to veg in 2 gallon smart pots and when it's time to flower the plants I'm just going to put the smart pot in the ebb bucket system. The smart pot should keep the roots contained/ air pruned.. That's my theory anyway.
I have some 3 gal. smart pots, but they're too big to fit inside the buckets. Will the 2 gal. fit?lol wtf is that creature?!

Have you actually tried this? I thought those pots worked by "air pruning" the roots. Seems the interior of the buckets stays near 100% humidityTake a peice of construction fabric, same stuff air pots, smart pots, root pots whatever you want to call them are made out of, and put a peice down to the bottom of the pots. Will not only fix your problem but will also force the roots to grow more veins.
Yes sir i have. i put a small square in the bottom of each of my titan ebb and flow system buckets. Only when the roots begin to reach the bottom on the bucket. Stops them from going into the tubes was my main concern. But ive not done a side by side to say if it 100% is causing them to grow more veins but o do believe so.I have some 3 gal. smart pots, but they're too big to fit inside the buckets. that may not work, they will grow surrounding the fabric id assumr. Gotta put it above the drain whole , also stops them from sitting in the stagnant water between cycles. Thanks to both of you. These seem to be viable options.. I have a disc of roots that have completely filled the void between the inner and outer pots. I suppose I could cut small pieces of the fabric and put it over the ends of the drain lines without destroying too much of the roots.
Maybe I could purchase a slightly larger than 2-gal. and place it between the two buckets? What do you call that material? The smart/air pots I have are the plastic kind with holes all over in them. Maybe I'll take an inner bucket to the grow shop and see if one fits.that may not work, they will grow surrounding the fabric id assumr. most pots are made out of simple construction fabric from menards, home depot, etc.Maybe I could purchase a slightly larger than 2-gal. and place it between the two buckets? Have you finished a grow with them? The guy at the local hydrostore said he didn't think smart pots will stop roots if there isn't sufficient air/light.I have the active aqua 2 gallon ebb n grow buckets, I did the same thing you are thinking about doing and brought the inner bucket in to match up to the smart pot.
Send me a PM. I'm 3 weeks to harvest myself, so you may not be able to tell before I start the next crop.I haven't tried it yet, but I will be very soon. I just moved and my flowering plants didn't take the trip well so I will be starting a new grow in a week or so using the smart pots. Worst case scenario, really tiny roots will grow tthrough (much like the tiny rootsthat grow through when the smart pot is sitting on the ground. Nothing major I'd imagine. There should be enough light to stop most roots in veg and in flower the roots grow much less, so we'll see and I'll let you know.
