Medical Marijuana In Vancouver Should Be More Regulated: City

VANCOUVER - The City of Vancouver is proposing tougher zoning and business-licence rules for medical marijuana retailers.

Citing a lack of clear and transparent guidance on the issue from the federal government, city staff plan to present the new regulations to the mayor and council next week.

A news release says the framework aims to balance the needs of those accessing medical cannabis with community safety, security and aesthetics.

The rules would require retailers to notify the public before opening a store, pay a $30,000 licensing fee and be located at least 300 metres from schools.

The Vancouver police department, school board, health authority and business-improvement groups provided input.

More than 80 medical marijuana stores have opened in the last two years, and the city says 20 of those launched during the last four months alone.

obvious innit?
they don't want any joe blow to be able to partake.. marijuana is/should be the most entrepreneurial product in this world. but they put up stumbling blocks to basically stop just anyone from giving it a shot (unless you've already got some nice money)
everywhere you look they're trying to make it impossible to start your own business in this.

this is only going to push more to blackmarket.
i'm hoping to see some big protest, but don't forsee it. sadly, most dispensaries will pay to still play.. and they'll end up screwing us all over in the long run. (with this being the new norm and acceptable)

more and more it's getting obvious to me; we're never going to see legalization like i want (and the true definition) ..setup is going to be only beneficial for the upper class. where us peons can't even grow, can only smoke it.. buying it from them :(

It is weird. $5K for a business license is still too much but still manageable but $30K per year admin fee? WTF? Basically with these amounts the city is getting itself into drug dealing and they want a chunk of the dispensary income, they're the gang that runs the streets and they want protection money.I t costs me $140 per year for a business license.

sounds like they're following the LP model, fewer larger dispensaries.. looking at a map with the proposed rules there are spots for maybe 50 dispensaries..

This is not good for anyone bit the LP's.If you read the entire document issued by the city, all dispensaries must apply for a license and approval is based on a number of factors.Realistically maybe 6-10 will pass the licensing process. There was suggestion in a news article that Dana Larsen was interviewed in, that a large number of Dispensaries will be moving shop to Toronto.I had heard this was coming last week and posted here asking if others thought Toronto was the next Vansterdam. I did not include any details on this,as i would of being bashed to death for source etc.I also had heard that once the city has collected licensing fees, etc the RCMP are going to start lying as many charges as possible.I wasn't born yesterday and find it very timely that this is coming into effect when many patients are saying loudly -Fuck The LP's. A little pressure to shut everyone down and keep the money flowing there way.

Basically the city realizes that mj is still illegal but they are willing to turn the other cheek for 2.4 million a year. I thought everyone wanted to get rid of organized crime and gangs not become them.
This is the most disgusting scenario the city could try to enforce. Its either illegal or its not ffs
I wonder how long before every other greedy city official hears of this and has visions of balanced budgets in their eyes.

Greed bags as far as the eye can see.
30k is pure stealing.....nothing surprises me as the non MJ user see it as their next big thing.
Everything I have ever said on this subject is true.
You don't gotta be a Hippy even to see the motivation has now turned to money from jailing folks.
Disgusting as ever...and believe me....I'll never co-operate.

wife & I just got back from Washington for a few days. $25 a gram!!! they said it was 84% tax!!!
Wait till it happens in Canada. They'll keep bitching about the black market while raking in $$$$$$$$$$$. I bet the day it becomes legal you'll see some magic stats come out how black market weed if imported from china, grown in toxic soil and flushed with formaldehyde.

if they charge $25 straight up, the BM will never go away & only the rich will partake. it will be "one of the finer things in life"
i hope it won't apply to MMJ
