Problems in Hempy???

Hey Everyone,

I recently switched over to 5 gallon hempy buckets from low pressure aeroponics.

I followed the standard method and have been using gh series for nutes. PH is usually 6.0 to 6.2 going in.

Every plant is starting to look the same... which is fucked. All new growth is dead or dying. It looks like the life is being sucked out of them.

Lighting is fluro and shouldn't be a heat issue since I'm between 70 and 80 degrees f.

Here are some pics any help is appreciated. I am very frustrated since I haven't had an issue like this before.

WOAH. I do hempy too. Never saw that problem. I also used GH Flora series, 3 part with grow, micro and bloom. I usually under nute the recommended schedule like 25% and work your way up. I iusually PH 5.8-6.

But I've honestly never seen that before. Might guess you are overnuting or they need some cal-mag. Try filtered water from the grocery store?

Meanwhile, consider a good strong flush with a pretty good runoff and maybe using the Lucas formula I linked below. Assuming someone else doesn't chime in with better advice.

Thanks Grow.

It doesn't look like nute burn to me. I was thinking a PH issue maybe (My meter could be off but I usually check it against the drop things just to be safe). I am at a loss. Anyone else?

Also, I am using tap water. It has never caused an issue like this before. My last 2 grows were with this exact same strain (see signature). Only thing that has changed is switching to hempys.

add epsom salt (magnesium) Mag Def. 1/4-1/2 tsp per gal.

Get at local pharmacy or target/walmart. May be found either by foot care/soaking stuff or fertilizers.

I do have CalMag. I just haven't been using since someone on the internet told me it wasn't needed with tap water.

So plan is to do basic 3 part flora series with CalMag, Ph'd and water until I know that it is all fresh solution. Looking at some other Mag deficent plants it looks pretty similar. The leopard looking leaves dying, etc.

Do you think I'll be good with CalMag or just go grab some epsom salt. Stuff is fairly cheap any way.

I use Cal-mag 1mg/litre or 4ml / gallon in my hempy's

I believe Cal-Mag will help your situation, and also your pH should be closer to 5.8 (you're running a bit high)

cheers

CalMag isn't needed for tap water. Tap water has plenty of calcium normally. Better to have Cal (if you ever need it) and Mag separately IMHO unless you are using RO or distilled (water with calcium removed.)

You can use your CalMag, but don't waste your money again.

How much light do you have on them? How close is your light, to the top of the canopy? Get it closer

What type of medium are you growing in, my Hempy buckets with coco eat up cal like crazy.

My guess would be ph. What are.you getting from your run off? 6.2 going in is a little high imo. I keep mine to 5.8-5.9 and let it swing up.

Thanks again, everyone. I took some more pictures and ran a shit ton of ph'd water with nutes (5/20 ratio) through them. Also re calibrated my PH pen and double checked with the droppers.

Water going in was 5.8. Not sure what it was coming out I didn't measure. Will see in a few days if there is any change. Before and after pictures to come.

Also the hempys are 3:1 perlite:vermiculite.

Lighting isn't the issue. They are the big CFL's and close enough not to burn anything.

Another question: I was watering them in the tent with trays to catch the run off. This caused me problems with gnats because of the standing water. I switched to watering in the bath tub letting them drain and then carrying them back into the tent. When these start to flower that isn't going to be as easy since they will be much bigger. How do you guys water your hempys? Or do you only water enough to not make it drain?

I would assume you want the same 20% runoff as you would in dirt. Diatomaceous earth on the top of the bucket helps a lot with gnats. Just keep the tray of water emptied as much as possible. You could add a pesticide or something to the tray since the water won't be going back into a pot.

I have used a turkey baster to suck up the wasted drain but I've never had bug issues. (BTW: you always want some drain).

I agree with nomo....remove as much drain water as you can then add something to the drain trays, such as bleach or disinfectants (Lysol, detergent) or a pesticide, and maybe get some of those sticky paper traps

Thanks again for all of the replys. Looks like adding in mag is helping. Well I'm using calmag but that is because I have a gallon of it and there is no reason to throw it away.

All the new growth is looking good. Couple of the plants are taking a little longer to correct but they were also the worst. Should be ready to flower as soon everything is back at 100 percent.

So I'v just been going back and forth with whatever the hell this is.... Very frustrating. At this point I am ready to throw the buckets outside and give up. So my goal now is to get them healthy enough to actually take clones. After those root I am back in Aero and back to better healthier plants.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Here is what I have been doing:

Watered Last Week
Ph: 5.5 - 5.6
Lucas Formula
Micro 5 ml/ gal
Bloom 10 ml/ gal
PPMs ~ 950

Watered on Wednesday
PH: 5.8 - 5.9
Lucas Formula 1/2 Strength
Micro 2.5 ml/ gal
Bloom 5 ml/ gal
CamMag 1 ml/ gal
PPMs ~ 800

I am down to 4 plants and I usually make 20 gals of mix and use 4 - 5 gal per pot (they are in 5 gal buckets).

That is a ton of water. I bet you are overwatering and causing root issues. Only time you should ever need to water 4-5 gal in a 5 gal pot is if it's DWC and you are changing water out.

I was under the impression that you couldnt over water hempys. How much should I be watering. To me it looks like lockout but I don't know.
