electrolysis

This may be a question for the duck but maybe some a few of you have dabbled. Is anyone familiar with electrolysis? Has anyone ever tried making Na OH through electrolysis from salt? It has been awhile since I have looked up on the subject but I'm curious about the end purity.

The voltage that is needed for electrolysis to occur is called the Decomposition potential

I've never done it because I've never needed to. I'd really suggest you look for a source of food grade lye.

Fill up a tub with saltwater, attach it to a long metal pole, set it up in a lightning storm. Boom, you've got sodium hydroxide. Nothing could go wrong with this plan, it's how Ben Franklin used to reduce his amines back in the colonial days.

And then he would fuck all the bitches. Seriously, Franklin was the Wilt Chamberlain of his day.

Duck I do use food grade. I just have a bad case of paranoia I suppose. Trying to keep this record sparkling clean.

Sodium hydroxide can be bought from supermarkets, in the drain cleaner section.
From memory it was 99.9% pure.

I don't even know what you guys use the NaOH for, but there's so many legitamate uses for it, that I would never think anyone was using it to make "hallucinatory substances". That would be my last guess, even if you were sweating profusely and stuttering over every word.

Skuxx that is the best way I just hate having to rely on people. Auswolf my local stores use alternatives to naoh or have a bunch of other nasty shit in it I don't want ending up in my product. Thanks all for the replies

Um, this is crazy. There are soooo many legitimate uses for NaOH it is ridiculous. Go buy it on e bay. It is used for drain cleaner, paint removal, carbomer ph balancing etc. Go to a soapmaking, or diy cosmetics website and buy all you want. Pretty much NaOH + fat = soap. Nothing suspicious about buying it
