Well The "stratum basale" cells divide continuously producing new cells, older ones are pushed toward the skin surface..
The cells that are pushed away from this layer of the epidermis then die and when the cells reach the skin surface, they are sloughed off. This is also where melanocytes are located producing melanin, causing your tan, inside vessicles (melanosomes) in the skin cells..to protect the nucleus and DNA.. so the melanin and skin cells together are what is left behind as the dust or whatever
