Help choosing an LED replacement for 1000HPS?

Hey guys I'm a long time lurker and first time poster here!

I've spent hours scouring the Internet and this forum looking for an answer to my question.

I'm currently using a 1000HPS in my 4 x 4 grow tent and I'm looking to replace it with a high quality LED grow light. I've found loads of different lights and all of them promising the best, although I've come to realize that they will say and promise just about anything to sell you their lights!

So after days of research I've managed to narrow it down to a few manufacturers. In no specific order these are the ones I've shortlisted.

Hydrogrow LED Extreme series 336X Pro - $1799

http://www.hydrogrowled.com/336X-PRO---500W-LED-Grow-Light-P87C60.aspx

Black Dog Platinum XL-U - $1999

https://www.blackdogled.com/products/universal-series/platinum-xl-u-11.html

Advanced LED DS XML 650 - $1595

http://advancedledlights.com/3w-led-grow-lights/new-diamond-series-xml-10w-cree-xml/?page_context=category&faceted_search=0

New Age LED Mega 600 - $975

http://www.mvphydroponics.com

From these options and your knowledge and experience which LED do you think would make a better replacement for my 1000HPS? Also if you have a better suggestion please fire away! My budget can go up to $2k if the light is good enough.

Thanks guys!

None of those would replace 1000w HPS.

3 or 5 watt single diode lamps generally aren't as efficient as HPS so no reason to switch to them. Take a look at COB led. Optic grow lights is the only company I know of currently selling them. Personally I wouldn't buy the larger ones due to efficiency issues. The 120 and 200 watt units would be nice lights to have. 4 120s in a 4x4 would be a nice setup, though perhaps could be a bit stronger. 4 200s would likely bee more light than you would want.

Area 51 uses quality 5 watt diodes and 150 watt version. 4 of those would be even better in a 4x4. They should also be coming out with COB lamps in the next couple weeks or something.

Best route would be DIY COB and get exactly what you want for cheaper, but would take a bit of research and work. Nothing difficult really, just time investment.

I will make this simple as can be ... Just save your money and wait. As of now for LEDs area-51 and Apache tech AT600 are your best choices for LED. WAITTT!!! COBS are on the verge of replacing those very units . Area 51 as well as the member greengenes are making new Cob units for purchase . If I were you wait and get those .

Hey Rahz thanks for your reply. It's strange that you mention none of those options would replace a 1000HID? On their websites they all claim for their LED to be a suitable replacement for a 1000HID?

I have looked at the Area 51 and they look good but I was unsure of the lighting selection? I noticed primarily white and red LED only. Forgive me I am still a noob in the LED game but from the research I've done so far and the majority of LED I have seen most have a combo of red, deep red, far red, blue, royal blue, white, and some have uv, but not only the use of white and red? Is white LED surpassing the use of blue LED for veg?

I have looked at DIY but to be honest I'm not the most technical guy around so I wouldn't feel confident building my own but rather choosing to buy from someone who has the knowledge and experience in LED.

Hey heckler73 I have actually been following his thread and seen he will be starting his own company?

I saw that he did a side by side of his DIY LED with an Apache Tech AT600? I have also noticed that he is using primarily white & red LED for his lights?

It seems the more I look into the various LED lights the more involved and detailed it gets lol. Some say full spectrum but they. It really, some say 4, 6, 8, 11 spectrum etc.. All I'm looking for is an LED that will be an excellent replacement for my 1000HID terms of quality and yield.

Hey THCbreeder thanks for your reply. I have looked at both of their manufactures and they look good. The Apache was over my budget unfortunately, not the most affordable LED around!

I keep hearing about the Area 51, but like I said above I was unsure of their choice of LED colors/spectrum? And I would also need a few of them to cover a 4 x 4 area.

I have also heard about the COB but haven't seen many people using it and I'm not very knowledgeable about it to be honest.

I believe PLC's (name of Co.) first light is straight COBs.
But his estimate is it will replace a 315W CMH. So it would probably require 2 of them, but perhaps run at lower power (using built-in dimmers).
Maybe I should just tag him and let him answer that for himself ?

WOW! Man that's an awesome set up!

Can you elaborate more on what you have there? Total growing area? How many plants? What size pots you using? Which model Area 51 you using? Are you only using 4?

Hey dj hope you find an led to replace your hid. Can I ask how the temp situation is like with your 1000w in a 4x4 (i assume 2m high)?

99.5% of LED sites are flat out lying to their customers. Unfortunate and gives LED a bad name.

A51 and Apache are a cut above the non sense. A51 seems to be blowing out their XPE/XTE based lights before they release their COB lights. So the XPE/XTE are at a relatively low price.

Optic Lighting has the market cornered on commercial COB lamps at the moment although competition is not far off. Very good lights and up to 42% efficiency which is ground breaking for commercial grow lamps.

We really still do not have a lock on the perfect spectrum but I am confident that efficiency trumps spectrum. White COBs are dominating when it comes to cost/efficiency and their spectrum is very good as well so I believe they have made red and blue emitters obsolete. That said, I still use some in my tents because I had already invested in them and they continue to work great. But for new buyers I recommend going with COB.

Hey Zaycor when I first started the tent ran very hot around 32-34'c! I was so scared it would not be good for my grow even though weed grows naturally here in over 35'c outdoors. Durban gets really hot! To help bring the heat down I put in a 6" extractor fan with a duct at the top and placed a fan at the bottom with a whole to bring in fresh air. I probably should have done this in the beginning lol. After that the temp dropped down to around 26-28'c. I would still prefer to drop it down to 25'c if I could. This is also one of the main reasons why I want to go to LED.

Hey SupraSPL thanks for your reply. So from the list of options there's none that you would suggest?

Maybe I'm still thinking old school with LED thinking that the blue an red LED are superior or better and shoodk check out the white a bit more.

Luckily I haven't pulled the trigger yet on a light but I don't want to hold off to long as I want to start my grow soon.
