USA! So no in person help but everyone here is great about helping out if you want to go the DIY route. Shipping to South Africa might be a problem though, not sure about that part.

Luckily I haven't pulled the trigger yet on a light but I don't want to hold off to long as I want to start my grow soon.
That's great. A lot of peeps come here and make their first post about the new LED they just bought.

If you want to work out rough but usable comparisons between LEDs you need to figure out their efficiency in lumens. There are better ways of measuring but lumen is an industry standard. If you can ID the emitters or COBs used you can look up the datasheet and figure out the LPW. IMO anything under 120 isn't worth messing with and that rules out most single diode lamps beyond the ones mentioned.

As far as spectrum, it's not really an established science and plants seem to do well with a mix of colors or white (mix of colors). Having X number of spectrums or all red/blue isn't a magic bullet. Wattage and lumens per watt (ultimately PAR) is what drives photosynthesis.

Getting above the 120 LPW mark, you're looking at being able to reduce the wattage vs HPS. At around 130 LPW a 600w LED is coming close to even with 1000w HPS, though I would suggest around 800-900 watts if you really want to surpass the bulb. I think 600 is plenty for a 4x4 as a replacement for a 600w HPS and 8-900 in a 5x5 as a replacement for a 1000w. Of course, some DIY lamps achieve 150-160 LPW and in that case a 600 could reasonably cover a 5x5.

Getting deeper into the math you can figure out the PPFD for any particular lamp in a particular space and measure the output vs the sun. If you are inclined to build stuff, you can DIY the lamp and get whatever LPW you want for less than the cost of retail.

Hey guys I'm a long time lurker and first time poster here!

I've spent hours scouring the Internet and this forum looking for an answer to my question.

I'm currently using a 1000HPS in my 4 x 4 grow tent and I'm looking to replace it with a high quality LED grow light. I've found loads of different lights and all of them promising the best, although I've come to realize that they will say and promise just about anything to sell you their lights!

So after days of research I've managed to narrow it down to a few manufacturers. In no specific order these are the ones I've shortlisted.

Hydrogrow LED Extreme series 336X Pro - $1799

http://www.hydrogrowled.com/336X-PRO---500W-LED-Grow-Light-P87C60.aspx

Black Dog Platinum XL-U - $1999

https://www.blackdogled.com/products/universal-series/platinum-xl-u-11.html

Advanced LED DS XML 650 - $1595

http://advancedledlights.com/3w-led-grow-lights/new-diamond-series-xml-10w-cree-xml/?page_context=category&faceted_search=0

New Age LED Mega 600 - $975

http://www.mvphydroponics.com

From these options and your knowledge and experience which LED do you think would make a better replacement for my 1000HPS? Also if you have a better suggestion please fire away! My budget can go up to $2k if the light is good enough.

Thanks guys!
From your list, the black dog or advanced would be your best options. Outside of that, the Apache tech AT600 is what I'd get.

Hey dj hope you find an led to replace your hid. Can I ask how the temp situation is like with your 1000w in a 4x4 (i assume 2m high)?
Thanks dj, 26-28c is pretty good I thought, if you added a fan above the canopy or towards the bulb the temps would be even better. Sounds like its more than possible to use a 1000w in a 4x4 tent. Im currently growing auto Durban Poison's...im sure you know all about this strain lol

Yeah I've thought about adding a fan at the top, I'll look into that thanks.

Yes I'm very familiar with DP ;) One of the best local weed around. It's hard to get really good quality sometimes cos there's so much other local sub grade stuff floating around. You got to know the right people to get it. Not sure how it compares to DP up there but this is the original lol. Swazi is really good and more easily available and probably one of the strongest natural strains in SA. I've got some good Swazi seeds that I'm contemplating doing an indoor grow with, that should be interesting!

I would buy none of the above. 4x4 1000watt replacement would be 4 - optic lighting 200watt vero29 3000K - I am using one now and works great.

unless you DIY best new tech is opticlighting,A51LED next month???
LUSH/VIPAR/ADVANCED are poopy! I use KINDK5750 and it was 1st light! But kind is poop! Those companies use way more watts needed for area covered! and most are shit componets!

You want the big buds= Vero29/Cree CXA/CXB 3k for straight flower and 4k for full cycle! doesn't get much easier than that! For the lighting that is! use 800 watts in the 4x4 to maximize the potential of area!

If your not up to DIY I would wait for the Area 51 COB light using Vero 2's. Jeff the owner has said his price point will be great and they're in production now so it shouldn't be to much longer,I'll be getting some as soon they become available.

Not sure if any or how many will be set aside for anyone,it may just be first come, first serve if demand is high on the release. It may also depend on how many he gets in with the first shipment.

Hey captainmorgan thanks for stopping by in my thread. I've looked up Area 51 and they look like great lights even though I don't quite understand the use of only white and red LED, but I'm sure they've done their research.

Unfortunately I've also seen that Area 51 won't ship to my country, so that option is out..

Area 51 RW's can be used for veg and flower. For veg you run just the whites and flower you add the reds, separate switches.

What Country are you in?

They do ship to Europe,New Zealand and Australia but you have to call for a shipping quote.
