Something else you can use as a soil amendment that is beneficial and cost effective (especially if you plan to re-use the plots) is cowboy or lump charcoal which is very different from the briquettes as it is naturally made by charring wood without chemicals. It helps too boost the beneficial bacteria population in the soil to improve the nutrient availability and soil texture and contributes to soil drainage and ond oxygen availability to the roots as well.

Whatever urine lands on in my yard usually ends up a dead brown spot or area......

I believe the urine burns due to the high level of nitrogen and salt possibly depending on diet, but if i'm wrong somebody feel free to chime in.

I also have lots of clay,it holds water for a while.if you dig down some put some pro mix or whatever with a plastic or fabric pot on top,the moisture will wick up.depends on how dry your area is.mine can hold water till july

Thats a cool idea i thought about using this method with a hempwick before but cloth pots wouldn't need it. Thanks for the info man.

Just get a couple smart pots and fill with a good soil mix.its hard work lugging all if that stuff in to your spot but the effort pays off.Last year I had a couple tangies that were pushing 12' in a 45 gallon smart pot.

Hell yeah man tallest ive grown ins probably 7' but i've always been hesitant to push them big as i had a lot of eyes in the sky in my area but i haven't noticed them as much lately. I don't mind the work as i love mixing and amending soil always trying to improve and always know what goes into it.

ok so i have a few locations to grow but what i can't decide is how I'm going to approach my medium. should i dig like 10-15 gallon holes in the ground and add a compost rich top soil? or should i just plant them in the ground and let the roots anchor themselves in? i have no problem with bringing some additives since I'm sure I'm going to be growing in a dirt thats made up of mostly clay, and if i do add something what should i use? mulch? coco? i want to plant them in ground instead of in pots because i don't want to have to water too often and i know they will get more moisture as opposed to pots where the amount of moisture would be limited, also I'm trying to only visit these plants once every 3 weeks at the most.. any ideas? thanks guys

i used smart pots indoor but I'm curious as to why you think it would be better to use smart pots outdoor opposed to just digging 45 gallon hole and putting a super soil in there

you ever seen a holstein farm? You ever see them "spreading on the fields" or throwing liquid shit? It works for them, why not us? Some of the best herbs ive EVER seen came off of vermont farms................
