People, particularly Americans, are still stuck in the "man up/walk it off" sort of phase of American psychology, and most psychologists agree, that doesn't help.. Have you seen the shaming techniques employed by some parents on youtube, fucking outrageous, some of them have even led to their kids committing suicide because of the shame their parents laid on them.. All dismissing they might have a legitimate issue..

It should be offensive to any american, because it represents the oppression of a specific group of people, based on the color of their skin. It should be down right unacceptable to the folks it's pointed at.

All Americans should be ashamed to display that flag.
I completely understand it's historical importance, it just so happens to be one of the links in the chain that I must go through to find out who I am.

I was having a conversation about the confederate flag yesterday, did a bunch of reading and discovered that there are only two views on this thing:

1. The con flag is racist and I you don't want it destroyed and forgotten then you are also racist.

2. There is a ton of history behind the flag, and there is a LOT that that flag has been used for/to represent.

Neither group will concede to the other, an in my opinion it's retarded. The confederate flag is just that, a flag. Just like the cross and swastika, it can be used to symbolize whatever the person bearing it wants. The fact that the flag is the main focus and not this idiot kid that killed people is baffling. Kkk used burning crosses, does that mean we should take down all crosses everywhere because the kkk is bigoted and racist?

The argument for this one is free speech/expression. I don't 100% care or agree on this one, but it is what makes it not as simple as, get rid of it because it bothers people.

I agree with you though, as far as what I would do, but on the level of this particular issue there are too many people involved that either do, or are pretending to give a fuck about it for it to be as simple as your solution should be.

The first part of this statement is arrogant. It should be offensive to all Americans because it's offensive to you and what it means to you? By that sentiment all fat people should have to wear clothes that fit them/are not skin tight because it offends me to see someone who doesn't take care if themself, and 90% of the people who wear yoga pants should not legally allowed to buy/wear them because no one wants to see their fat ugly shit in tights.

Oh wait... That's just my opinion...

The second part of your statement was worded in a way that made it sound more generic and accepting than the rest of what you were saying. But you should have probably stated that you understand the historical significance of it to you, not to anyone else because a lot of people think it has more historical meaning than just the succession and slavery stuff, which it does if you do some reading.

Whether or not you agree with the opinion, or whether it means racism to you, that is your opinion, and it is not shared by everyone. America is being able to say what you want an display what you want without fear of prosecution. People can disagree with it all they want but it is your right as an American.

I think it was family guy that said, "while I disagree with what you're saying, I'll defend, to the death, your right to say it."

I watched Dukes of Hazzard and liked it... totally missed the racial stereotype undertones.

When I got older and learned what it stands for, I got rid of my toy General Lee hot wheels.

Warner Bros.’ consumer products division has decided to cease licensing replicas of “Dukes of Hazard” character General Lee’s vehicle with a Confederate flag on the roof, as efforts to remove the flag from statehouse grounds and other public spaces gains momentum in the wake of last week’s shootings in Charleston, S.C.

“Warner Bros. Consumer Products has one licensee producing die-cast replicas and vehicle model kits featuring the General Lee with the confederate flag on its roof — as it was seen in the TV series,” a spokesman for the studio said. “We have elected to cease the licensing of these product categories.”

“Dukes of Hazard,” which ran from 1979 to 1985, and was the source of a 2005 feature film, was part of an era of southern chic, including movies like “Smokey and the Bandit” and southern classic rock. “Dukes” featured “two good ole boys” who perpetually eluded sheriff’s deputies in their ’69 Dodge Charger, with the confederate emblem painted on top.

Retailers like Amazon, Sears, eBay and Wal-Mart announced on Tuesday said that they would no longer sell products featuring images of the Confederate flag.

Although the confederate imagery was the part of “Dukes of Hazzard,” and was used in merchandising and other imagery by the 70s by the band Lynyrd Skynyrd, politicians and businesses have called for its removal as it has been used as a symbol of white supremacy.

While the flag may have been a pop culture symbol of southern rebellion and heritage back in the 70s, in the past generation it increasingly is viewed differently, a reminder of slavery. Even in the “Dukes of Hazzard” feature in 2005, the Duke brothers get some blow back for driving in a vehicle featuring it.

On CNN on Tuesday, former Rep. Ben Jones (D-Ga.), who played “Cooter” on “Dukes of Hazzard,”said the show “featured a Confederate battle flag in a very positive context, in a place where there was no racism.”

“I know the world’s not like that, but you must understand that that flag has been seen and is now seen also in positive contexts,” he said. “It’s been used by racists, by horrible people such as this man who killed those people in Charleston. A terrible thing. I’m sure he’s also used the American flag.”

You just cant be American. If you were you would know that this is just not true, you should do some reading...

What other historical meaning do you think the confederate flag could possibly have, other than to display your stance on the right to claim ownership of human beings?

I forget where this quote comes from but I think it fits.

I really dont care how many people want to keep it up for whatever reasons, what's right is right.
