My Favorite Coco

I call this mixed coco. I've grown with straight coir, (coffee grounds). And coir mixed with the pith (the thin strands from the husk) which IMO preforms better than straight coir. I've taken it a step further to include coir, pith, and chunk, by mixing a coconut mulch. Coco wicking to keep moisture levels is the same, but the new geometry with the chunk leads to more space for air.





I live in an area where the cost of living is high, but that pile of coco cost me $26. And will last my small grow operation well over a yr.

I am in the process of completing the build on my new grow room and I have been looking at those cubes to go along with the regular canna coco coir to help curb the cost a bit and get the benefit of better medium aeration as well.

Outdoors I'm running Jack's Classic, and indoors I run Osmocote.

This is my second batch, I did this last summer also, the results have been good and it's easy to work with.

For those who don't have the room to expand out 2 blocks of coir, (link) GH makes small bricks of mixed coco, the chunk is finer in these and they are a little pricey, but still less than bagged.

I read through this again and noticed that I never went through expanding and the amount of cal/mag used.

Most name brand brick coco these days is really clean, so I don't do a bunch of rinses to start. I try to use the min amount of water to get everything saturated. The CoCogro takes 4 to 5gal the mulch takes 3 to 4 gal. I add 10ml/gal of cal/mag, and adjust ph to around 6. No nutrients. I let is sit for at least 1/2hr. Then spread it out and let it dry.

I haven't tried it yet but have had the same thought. I don't see why it wouldn't excel. Next time I expand a brick I plan on giving it a try.
