Why transplant?

Just a quick one, I was wondering why people transplant seedlings/young plants. Why not just start them in a big pot to get past all the risk of shocking them too much and potentially killing the plant that transplanting can cause? I'm probably missing something just something I've been musing over for a bit

Because baby plants don't like hot (fertilized) soil. People usually start in a less volatile medium until the plant is established. I've found coco fiber cups are a great way to "transplant" with no shock, just plant the cup. It depends how often you want to feed during watering. Some growers use inert media and feed often or continuously, hydroponic-style, some folks like to make super soil then just water the plants until harvest. Most folks are in the middle somewhere.

The above pretty much applies to every vascular plant.

many people have transplanted without causing any shock, I think if anything transplanting without the proper know-how, and maybe overfeeding to compensate for the extra grow medium and size of the pot that cause shock

It depends what your growing media is, also all the other comments made so far are perfectly valid. I've never hurt a plant significantly transplanting it.

I asked for this exact reason I lost one out of my 3 plants after transplanting 2 turned out fine but I must have handled one too roughly n killed it.... Fuck! Ah well got some more auto seeds on the way

yes I forgot as well, yeah that is actually a great reason you don't want to waste all your time, nutes and space on a male plant

dude, I wish i could advise you but I'm a Hydro guy, well switch to hydro is the best advice i can give you, I use hydroton in pots on a floodtable no stress at all from moving it from cloner or veg bucket, and if you do encounter stress, it would only take a few days rather than weeks to recover

Most newbies don't know how to water properly and for that reason they shouldn't use big pots for seeds. You can and will over water the fuck out of a seedling in a bigger pot. It's a little bit easier in a solo cup to gage how dry or wet your new plant is.


autos, on the other hand, need to be placed in whatever pot you're going to flower in from the beginning. You don't want to slow an auto down ever.
