I doubt Ronald Reagan's response as president started in 1947. That's just me, I could look it up to verify that, but doubt I will have to.Cold War - 1947-1991

You keep asking for the single answer to this increase. Guess what? Its all of those things, and more, combined. After Nixon closed the gold window, that gave congress the ability to print as much money as they wanted to do whatever they wanted and place it all on the backs of everyone who uses the US dollar.US GDP 1982 = $3.3 Trillion, S.T.A.R. Wars Program cost $158 billion since its inception (~35 years = ~$4.5 billion/year)
$298.5 Billion allotted for military spending during the Cold War ($600 Billion in 2015)
None of that comes close to increasing the debt to ~50% GDP
It's not a war, it's not a specific program, it's a fundamental change in policy
I'm still researching the elimination of the Bretton Woods system, so I'll get back to you on that
IMO2008 financial crisis. Feel free to start your own thread if you want to discuss that, this one is about the spike that took place around 1972
How about we make all politicians only spend what they have taken in as revenue rather than spend our grandkids into poverty.
Who is with me?
Is the answer the Pool-Scrubbers Union of 'Murica ?
it doesn't though.when the deficit spikes up under Democrats
that would be you, since you favor republicans, and that is all that republicans do.I guess you are in favor of deficit spending.
I am with you. good post.I think the post illustrates perfectly the binary thinking of the OP.
You see, he believes in 2 sides and one side is right while the other is wrong. So, in Pada's opinion, when the deficit spikes up under Democrats it is all for the good of the people but when the deficit spikes up under Republicans it is because those people are evil and want to kill everyone's grandma!!
Some of us... Dont like the fact that the debt keeps going up year after year with no end in site while other people argue over how much we are bleeding out only when the people they dont like are in power.
How about we make all politicians only spend what they have taken in as revenue rather than spend our grandkids into poverty.

ProjectionI am with you. good post.
you also said democrats spike the deficit.I state that the government should live within it's means and the partisan bickerers are so entrenched they want to argue with this....
Bizzare, truly bizzare.
That depends on how much the illusion of health in an economy is based on perpetual GDP growth.I guess you are in favor of deficit spending. Are you at leas bi-partisan in that you want it to happen all the time?
There is no room for nuance in this debate you suicidal progressive lemming. That depends on how much the illusion of health in an economy is based on perpetual GDP growth.
It also depends on what it is spent on.
Now that's an insult! There is no room for nuance in this debate you suicidal progressive lemming.
LOLRepdudited, sucka!
If the fucking idiots can stay out of a war for more than 10 years we might be able to work on the debt. Repubes and some Dems start wars but the repubes refuse to pay for them... could that be part of the fucking problem? Oil and gas subsidies are kinda like a welfare too but...I guess you are in favor of deficit spending. Are you at leas bi-partisan in that you want it to happen all the time?
