Philips cdm-t evolution DIY. Help needed!

I am planning to build my own light.
I heard about great results with the philips cmd elite 315 and while I did a lil research I came across this bulbs
http://www.lighting.philips.com/main/prof/lamps/compact-high-intensity-discharge/mastercolour-cdm/mastercolour-cdm-t-evolution/928064305131_EU/product&ved=0CEcQFjAFahUKEwiw7YyIi5jHAhXsB9sKHdALBkM&usg=AFQjCNHHsK_cNlRSrHBVCk6hrzg_QBoW-A

I want to use 3 of the 20w or 35w version of the philips cdm-t evolution in a small box.

For a little minimalistic indoorgrow over the winter. Iam looking for small wattage because my house is powered by a few solarpanels only. I want to put each bulb on a switch so I can run all 3 on sunny days 2 on cloudy days and 1 on critical days.

Its not for yield just for fun.

If you have experience in using some light like this or similar ones please tell me if it is any good and worth a try.

Peace

If you care about heat, you must live in a hot place...
Have you ever think about using led/cob
With a few bridge lux V13 you could have a cheap and efficient light...jmo
Have a great day

Heat is an issue over here from end of may untill early october. This time even a 20w cfl is enough to get me into trouble. But I do a lil outdoor in this time no need for indor then.

I first thought about led but I have good experience with mh lights from past projects. And I would rather do a small sog than scrog.
the deeper light penetration compared to led lights are the main point for me. I dont doubt led are great lights but I heard 300w of that phillips cmd 315elite would equal 600w hps or mh. So my idea was to use this kind of lights in a small space to have a compareable amount of par to hps and mh with just a low wattage.

Led for example cree cobs would use more watts I guess and I was told this philips bulbs burn cooler than led even.
In any case I will aircool the lamp

No you could run cobs super low and bit mid 50s in efficiency. Which I would bet saying is about 10-15% more efficient than the HID. (Less heat for the same light)

I dono how tall your box is but cobs dont seem to have trouble penetrating the canopy. If you find they aren't doing what you want, you can add reflectors and I bet that sorts it out real fast.

The thing is that philips will not release shit. When they released that 315w horticulterlight with the cmd-t elite the they did it for a good reason. If led would have gotten better results in their research they would have used led Id believe.
the evolution version is just the new generation of the bulbs and a replacement for the elite version with even more efficiency.

I heard some people here on riu have experience with the 315w version and hoped for help to make my decission easier.

I can get 2x35w with drivers and all installation material for a lil over 100€. That would not burn a hole in my pocked but if the investment is useless I will end up building a other lamp naybe led.
the specs of the cmd/cdm bulbs is just awsome when you read it.

I don't think so....

strongly recommend that you build a simple cree cxb cob light, and run them for high efficiency. It will use less power, and produce less heat than any HID bulb.

The CMD does 1.9 umol/s per watt.
The CXB 3070 and 3590 time do more per watt, see the post I linked.

So Cree cobs would not use more watts.

from one of the links frica provided, this one post gets the point across bluntly. Keep in mind that most of the light from an HID light bounces off of the reflector with substantial losses.

I know you already know this but for those learning, It is not possible to directly compare efficacy between HID and COB because of complications with reflector losses, spectral distribution, spread, photon angle and of course price. We can compare PPF (bulb emitted photon count/dissipation W) to get a starting point though.

Philips 1000W DE HPS = 2.07 umol/s/dissipation W (41.5% efficient)
Philips 315W CMH 4200K = 1.95 umol/s/dissipation W
Bridgelux Vero 29 3K V2.0 @ 79W = 1.97 umol/s/ dissipation W
Cree CXA3070 3K AB @ 52W = 2.11 umol/s/ dissipation W
Cree CXA3070 3K AB @ 25W = 2.46 umol/s/ dissipation W
Cree CXB2530 3K U2 @ 18W = 2.4 umol/s/ dissipation W
Cree CXB3070 3K AD @ 50W = 2.34 umol/s/ dissipation W
Cree CXB3070 3K AD @ 24W = 2.7 umol/s/ dissipation W
Cree CXB3590 3K CB @ 49W = 2.52 umol/s/ dissipation W
Cree CXB3590 3K CB @ 23W = 2.86 umol/s/ dissipation W
Cree CXA3590 5K DB @ 24W = 2.96 umol/s/ dissipation W

Adding a new favorite:
Cree CXB3590 3500K CD @ 23W = 2.98 umol/s/dissipation W
That sounds impressive.
the 5k would work for veg and flower right?
Wattage would be perfect too.

I thank all you guys for posting!!!
very helpful!
I think I will go for led and find me a source for those cobs over here in europe.

Thanks

Peace

the 3500k cxb3590's will be best for veg and flowering. a couple of the 36v cxb3590's running at 700ma which is 23w each is 64% efficiency which would be very hard to beat.
Best place to buy these leds would be from kingbrite over at alibaba.
I will check alibaba. Never bought something from there but I will look into it. Most stuff we get here from amazon or directly from the producing company but I got told you can nearly get everything from alibaba too.

I will post new thread on the building of the lamp because I know its not only the led's I need its also the drivers and cooling material. I want also a fuse for each cob and a switch so that I can run single cob or two or all at a time. I need to stay flexible. Because my solarsystem is loading my batteries but after 7 days without sunshine in wintertime I nearly run out of power sometimes. But thats only in december and january when days are short and sunshine is not often.

As soon as I get my next paycheck I will start buying material for the lamp and before buying anything I will post the new thread for support from the beginning because I dont want to run into buying bad parts because of my limited knowledge.

YOU GUYS AT RIU ROCK !!!!

Bonjour
There is....but much more expensive!
I bought some from kb and I wait for them...it took china post option (10 $) I will let you know if everything is ok.
For the heatsink TME is the best site I could find.
And for the driver I need a hlg-185-1400b but there is no availability in tme before end september, mouser are out of stock, and the others are very expensive shipped to E.U.So if someone have an idea about where to buy this driver...in E.U and at about 70€ (85 $)with vat and shipping included.
Thanks
Have a great day ★

meanwell.co.uk is a distributor. If they won't sell direct they might give you names of distributors in your area.

@SupraSPL
Contacted a distributer for led in my country and they dont have those cobs minimum order for them from the wholesale is 1000pcs. They offered me nichia cobs.
On alibaba the guy states minimum order is five pcs. 50$ for one thats 250$ minimum order.
Without drivers.
That in my case is not a good deal for just playing around with the microgame a lil bit.
When I use this cdm evolution the lamp would be with drivers sokets and wiring with 2x35w bulbs not more than 110.- €. 3x20w ~ 150.-€.
The thing is I am after reading alot of led stuff very intrested in led.
But money is short and its impossible to spend that much for the led's + all the stuff needed. 400€/500$
That would mean I have to go for the evolution and hope they will do a good job too.

@littlejacob
Whats the price per pcs in your order?
^^^ if you read the above you can see Iam a lil bit fucked about the pricething.
And it seems like nobody can tell me if the cdm evolution is any good for my microgrow project.
lack of information always sucks ass.
led is more than double the price but when the cdm is some old bullshit for growing micro I threw the money for it out of the frontdoor.
maaaaan..... that sucks

@SupraSPL
I found a supplier in my country for thr cxb3590 70€ for one ( I think about spending the extra money at the moment for the leds)
but they dont tell about the wattage.....
dunno if I am on the right track but it seems the driver is setting the used wattage...is that right?

When it comes to Cree COBs, the part number is very important. If you were to pay 70€ you would want to make certain you are getting the rare top bins. I suspect you could get them shipped in from China for much less, no tax and you will be able to get top bins in relatively small quantities. Try Jerry from Kingbrite: j[email protected]
