Mycelium Cake Waterlogged?

Hey guys. So I'm just getting the hang of growing mushrooms and I stumbled across a problem.
Basically I finished the first flush of a mycelium cake and I dunked and rolled it again. I was very eager for the second flush to happen because I had plans to take them with a friend. But after a few days they still weren't pinning so I dunked and rolled it again. It's now been a week and still no sign of pinning. After some research I came to the conclusion that the cake is too wet. So I put it in front of a fan for a few hours to let it dry and the mycelium turned blue due to the intense fanning. At this point I decided to crumble the cake and pack it in a bowl with a layer of vermiculite and see if it grows that way. and even though it was dry on the outside, I could clearly tell that the inside of the cake was waterlogged based on how easily it broke apart. anyway, I made sure there was no excess water before putting it in the bowl and is now sitting in a cabinet above my fridge in incubating conditions. In a few days I plan to shed some light and try to get some pinning. I only need one more good flush and it sucks that plans had to be put off because of this.
What could I have done differently besides the second dunk and roll? I realize that was an idiotic mistake. How would I go about drying a cake that's been waterlogged without bruising the mycelium? Did I make the right choice by crumbling the cake and putting it in a bowl?
In the future I plan to try and grow mycelium in a jar of popcorn and see if I get better results. Stay tuned for a thread on that :)

Not use BRF again would be the first thing I would do differently. Theres a tek out there where people will use sterilized forks to lightly scratch the outer layer of myc to stimulate growth, event tho its not recommended. When I did brf I just left them alone, gave em a good misting and after a few more days they would flush again. My bet on your bowl project is death by trichoderma. You have the right idea tho popcorn/wbs is the way to go, you pull a substantial amt more out of a casing.

Death by trichoderma?
