What caused this spike in national debt?

I doubt Ronald Reagan's response as president started in 1947. That's just me, I could look it up to verify that, but doubt I will have to.
US GDP 1982 = $3.3 Trillion, S.T.A.R. Wars Program cost $158 billion since its inception (~35 years = ~$4.5 billion/year)

$298.5 Billion allotted for military spending during the Cold War ($600 Billion in 2015)

None of that comes close to increasing the debt to ~50% GDP

It's not a war, it's not a specific program, it's a fundamental change in policy

I'm still researching the elimination of the Bretton Woods system, so I'll get back to you on that

You keep asking for the single answer to this increase. Guess what? Its all of those things, and more, combined. After Nixon closed the gold window, that gave congress the ability to print as much money as they wanted to do whatever they wanted and place it all on the backs of everyone who uses the US dollar.

2008 financial crisis. Feel free to start your own thread if you want to discuss that, this one is about the spike that took place around 1972
IMO
Nixon was forced by Protest, to do a lot of things like form the EPA. The polluters pouted, and pitched a fit, and basically said, well if you feel that way, lets see how you like not having any pollutants at all.
Nixon found the control over the public. Fear of no oil. Society must now downshift. News reports of continuing protest are drowned by the woe's of the Oil Industry.

Trillions of Dollars to fight for freedom......

I think the post illustrates perfectly the binary thinking of the OP.

You see, he believes in 2 sides and one side is right while the other is wrong. So, in Pada's opinion, when the deficit spikes up under Democrats it is all for the good of the people but when the deficit spikes up under Republicans it is because those people are evil and want to kill everyone's grandma!!

Some of us... Dont like the fact that the debt keeps going up year after year with no end in site while other people argue over how much we are bleeding out only when the people they dont like are in power.

How about we make all politicians only spend what they have taken in as revenue rather than spend our grandkids into poverty.

Who is with me?

it doesn't though.

clinton and obama both lowered the deficit. clinton eliminated the fucking thing. obama cut the deficit by over a trillion dollars.

then we hand it off to the republican candidates you love so much and we get surpluses that turn into all time record deficits.

you need to stop denying reality so hard ya little shit weasel.

I state that the government should live within it's means and the partisan bickerers are so entrenched they want to argue with this....

Bizzare, truly bizzare.

you also said democrats spike the deficit.

the opposite is true. democrats lower or eliminate the deficit. republicans raise it.

you should vote for democrats, except for the fact that we don't welcome racists like you to the party.

There is no room for nuance in this debate you suicidal progressive lemming.
Now that's an insult!
I am not a progressive...I am PROGRESS!
Did you hear that the lemming story is a myth?

Probably the most egregious misrepresentation of True Life occurred in White Wilderness (1958). The film crew brought a handful of lemmings from Manitoba to Alberta, placed them atop a large, snow-covered turntable, and filmed their movements from various angles. Later the crew brought the rodents to a precipice above a river and herded them off, faithfully recording the lemmings’ fatal leap.

Repdudited, sucka!

I guess you are in favor of deficit spending. Are you at leas bi-partisan in that you want it to happen all the time?
If the fucking idiots can stay out of a war for more than 10 years we might be able to work on the debt. Repubes and some Dems start wars but the repubes refuse to pay for them... could that be part of the fucking problem? Oil and gas subsidies are kinda like a welfare too but...

It is not likely federal government debts will ever be paid off and it is not the intention of the USA government to do so.

I like that you called them fucking idiots.
