Not defending them in the least as I do think their presence is at the least inflammatory, but I've been out of the loop for the last couple - any reported negatives in the media?

I'd call walking about armed to the teeth in the crowd without reaching out beforehand to make sure they were welcome is a negative. They project a menacing paramilitary police presence among protesters that know if they did the same they would be down in a pool of their own blood before they could say don't shoot. So yeah, a lot of negatives.

Looks very much like the paramilitary groups in Iran... They probably seemed neutral until they weren't.

I would call their walking about within the crowd of protestors with impunity unannounced and unwelcome, armed to the teeth is a negative interaction with the crowd. And no issues with the police, its all good bro, you are within your rights to open carry. Of course, they are members or ex members of police, so its all good with them.
