I currently use a 2x2x4 cab and I have 2 cree cxa 3070's and its insane. I run two plants and can pull usually 180g easy.
Dear NorthernHize,

I need your help! I'm planning to build my own little growbox and I want to use CREE CXA cobs (There is the full line of CXA cobs available in my country). As I can see, you use your 2 CREE CXA 3070 cobs in your 2x2x4' cab very efficiently! I am planning to build an even smaller growbox (but if it's needed - I can expand the measurements to 2x2x4') with the following measurements:
- height - 1m (3' 4" )
- width - 60 cm (2')
- length - 40 cm (1' 4")

I have got 5 questions:

1) The main problem I'm anxious of is damaging my plants with such powerful cobs - is it possible that the light would burn or damage the plants?

2) What is the distance between your plants and CREE CXA3070 cobs - does this distance prevent the damaging of plants or it doesn't matter at all?

3) What particular type of CREE CXA3070 cobs do you use - 3000K, 3500K or 5000K?

4) What driver do you use (should it be dimmable?) and how soft (at what mA) do you run your cobs?

5) Where can I see your growbox, maybe you've got a thread about it (I've failed to find one:(( ) ? Maybe you know the best combination of cobs and driver for my cab - for example, using less powerful (CXA2530 or 2540, 2590 or 3050) cobs or something like that or should I just stick to your combination?

Thank you so much in advance, bro! ;)

Cheers,

Max

You may y not have enough height for cxa3070 or cxb cobs, but vero cobs will work great, I'll steer you toward a really great guy who is really good with the led cobs he yhas helped me allot, also I have not seen northern hize on for acouple of weeks, maybe he is on vacation?

Dear Tim Fox,

Thank you very much for a fast reply! I would highly appreciate if you steer me toward the guy who's a great specialist at LED cobs sphere.
I'm rather new to this technology and maybe you can explain few basic aspects to me?:

1) You said that vero cobs will work great - what particular model - Vero 18 or 29?

2) How many K - 5000 or other is the best for growing (I need the most versatile option - for both veg and bloom)

3) Does the possibility of damaging the plants depend on the cob's power? I mean I should use more powerful e.g. CXA3590 or less powerful cob - e.g. CXA2530 not to damage the plants in my growbox?

4) And why have you said that Vero cobs are more friendly (in the meaning of causing less damage) to plants than the CREE ones? Don't they use the same principle of working just the different branding?

I ask these questions because I have better access to CREE cobs in my country (Ukraine) and I can buy them cheaper than Vero ones. So if they are similar - I'd prefer to stick to CREE cobs.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best wishes,

Max

Is that hydro or soil? I just built a 2x2 basically and I have 5 cxa3070's @1050mAh.. I hope it wont be overkill. haha EDIT: My cab is almost 6' tall tho, hopefully ill be fine. I can turn them down if need be.

What's your budget?

I would seriously consider building your own light. Very easy, basic tools, top quality, last for years....

The problem with the Ebay leds, is that they are more than likely Less efficient than a HPS of similar wattage, which as someone commented is around 110 watts....

So if the 110 watt light was 25% efficient overall [still better than cfl], you would have about 27.5 watts of useable light and 82.5 watts of heat....

These lights also usually have little to no heatsinking. Usually an aluminum pcb plate that all led's are soldered to and then fans create active cooling.....still this can lead to hotter LED's at the Tc [junction temp, where the LED and metal/Tim meet...and doesn't help when more heat is also heating up ambient air [Ta].

An 150w HPS is probably about as efficient and maybe a touch more so with a new bulb....but after your 1st cycle, the bulb will start to depreciate in efficiency....

Quality diodes that you can build and select your own colors are readily available....some I run for instance are over 40% while running about 18" in height over plants....

You could easily run a softer driven LED [less current] in a shorter space and still get maximum penetration and coverage from your own fixture...:peace:
Could you hard wire a micro grow box with LEDs?

i have two plants under two cxa3070 ab's 3k @ 1.4A - one plant under direct light is pale green, but structure is ok, second is dark green, but it has trained and all center is empty, so one is more sensible to direct sunlight, imo... like ufo hole ;D

Here's my twin vero 29 3000k setup. It gets quite warm, need a better ventilation setup. So today is just a trial I guess hopefully doesn't crisp the plant up
The cab its in is something like 2ft high and 1ft wide and deep so pretty small :/ I do have a bigger box I'm working on ATM though

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Rollitup mobile app

Did you use the dimmable driver?

sorry for not replying sooner, I moved and started a new job. It is promix, which is basically passive hydro.

1 An led cob could burn a plant, I have never done it myself. Keep it 6-8" away and no harm will come.
2 I pretty much answered this in number 1
3 my cree cobs are 3K
4 I use mean well lpc-60-1750 and lpc-60-1400. some people will tell you that these drivers are potentially over driving the cobs and surpassing point of diminishing returns. I do what I want. I am on season 3 of growing with the same leds and at this point have already surpassed the savings 2 fold versus HPS so that sums it up.
5 I am probably guilty of not having my grow cab on here, my fault. Dimensions are dimensions I would never tell you to copy my exact formula, however it does work so feel free.

sorry for the long wait I know how it can be but I moved and started a new job good luck and anymore questions just ask

Hey Church are you driving 2 cxa3070's with the lpc 60 1750, or one driver per cob, also does that driver make the cxa3070 burn brighter than the lpc 60 1400,, I want to ad more cobs to my box and the cost on the cxa3070s is so cheap now I was wondering about just getting more of those , I wouldnt mind kicking them up a notch
