FFOF seems too hot, should I try another medium?

the bag that seems most recommended (FFOF) burnt most of my plants when they were young. I was thinking about maybe cutting it with some Happy frog given that its a little less nutrient rich, along with some perlite. Or would it be best to just switch soils all together? I hear a lot of good things about Roots organic, but I feel like i might get more ingredients and nutrition over all using ocean forest mixed with happy frog. What do my fellow RUI'ers think? Keep in mind, this will be my second grow.

I enjoy soilless mixes because I have complete control over what nutrients I have in the soil. I also use maxigrow and maxibloom from General Hydroponics.

Kiss (keep it simple stupid). Is a great motto to grow by

If I was going to mix soil I would start with a blank soil and then put in what I wanted. If ur going to have to put in the work mixing might as well have exactly what you want. But as I said before I use soiless and have limited "real soil" and amendment experience

you and I are using the exact same nutrients. That aside, I dont yet think im experienced enough for soilless, even though i think i'd rather do soilless in the future, its only my 2nd grow so im still quite a newb. Which is the same reason that I don't mix my own soil. This may sound lazy, but im not very good at math and scaling, etc. So even though there are plenty of good super soil recipes out there, im certain I would mess something up pretty bad somewhere down the line. Plus with all these users on this forum getting great results from bagged soil, if it isn't broken, dont fix it. But in this case I need just a small bit of fixing :p

I actually am switching to the roots (being shipped!!:)) but it's the regular one not the 707 head band I have heard bad things about that one, so if you decide get the regular roots not the 707 or there is like 2 or 3 more..but from my research the regular is their better product...has a lot of essential amendments in it

To roots from Ocean forest? Is this your first time using it?

You could start your seeds in a seedling mix like light warrior. I used to use it until my local shop started a less chunky mix. Served my little ones well.

The soil is for clones. I get them in solo cups and I dont transplant for 2 or 3 weeks, so they are probably about half way through veg by the time I transplant.

The formula for OF has changed recently. IT IS TOO HOT. I used it exclusively for my Moms/clones(grow 'dro) . Last bag bought 3 months ago burnt the shit
out of everything I put into it.

I now have been using their Happy Frog...............................last 2 months.......................no issues.

I have heard this a lot lately, and it makes me lean towards organics more and more. Everyone said ocean forest use to be great stuff, and lately its just too hot and the ph seems to be all over the place. It makes me quite nervous, and personally as an inexperienced grower, theres so much that can go wrong, i really dont want to worry about plants burned by soil :(

After experimenting with a few things I've settled in with one part FFOF, one part Pro-Mix and one part Perlite. Right around the time I switch to flower I mix in some Dolomite lime mainly because up until now I havent been able to rely on the PH meter that I have so I fly without one.
For me that same mix works for seedlings as well but this is where different strains can react differently.

I was running a 50/50 mix of Ocean Forrest and Pro-Mix HP and have for several years. The last 6 months has been nothing but trouble out of this mix. I don't know what they did but I've went back to coir now and will stay with it.

just to clarify, is the issue the pro mix or the ocean forest?

I can't really tell but I used pro-mix for years without any problems. And I've ran the 50/50 mix for several years without problems until recently. I live in the Eastern part of the US and I believe they use a different mix then they do on the west coast.

Ocean forest is fine the problem is your root systems/weak plants.. If your clones are healthy and thriving you guys won't have these problems. You can't expect an unhealthy semi rooted clone to take a punch... When all is healthy fox farm is great I actually mix all the bags together and add ewc..

No perlite. After clones root I dedicate at least 3 weeks to growing a dense root system in a one Gallon Under a t5... roots are important. . Then they veg in 3 gallons.. A week before I flip I transplant to 5 gallons. And I still feed while this is happening no burn at all.

The burn happens because tiny roots can't take it.

The burn happened because I requested "low nutrient, low maintenance" strains, but the same person also recommended pure ocean forest. It was just too much for a small clone that doesn't need much food.
