Do any of you guys that own pits have kids? If so, do you trust them around the kids?

I've kicked around the idea of adopting one, but I'm a little gun shy on them as I lost a good friend to their family pit bull. Grown ass woman (35 at the time iirc) got in to an argument with her mother. As she was going to leave she knocked a lamp over by the door which apparently startled the pit (along with the yelling) and the dog made a bee line to her, took her down and ripped her throat right out. Pronounced dead at the scene.

This was about 6 years ago, and I've been real hesitant with that breed ever since. I don't know how the dog was raised/treated though. They were kinda a disfunctional family.

Very sad....

Yes,my pit sleeps with my lil girl.runs along side her bike, and would die for her..

I think dogs,do what they see.

If you can get one from birth, that be the best bet.

That's a hard subject to speak on,but that dog sounds like it was in the wrong home,or came from a ruff home.

no kids where i am stow, just me & mrs, no i would not trust mine near kids, dont fully trust him near us either, but he was badly treated by previous owners so he has an excuse for psycho behaviour...i cannot comment on the breed as a whole cept what everybody has seen in the media anyways, mine isnt a full pitty too but a typical australian bull arab, which can be a fairly loose combination of approx 4-6 breeds...man thats an horrific thing that happened to that woman with that pitty...ffs

Bro I have and 8 and 4 year old and my daughter was 1 when I got my blue and she hasn't done anything to hurt her. My father in law has huge pit all white double my girl size she has been around her since she was 1 my youngest and his dog is good was raised with all his kids just fine. They are great dogs and great with kids I wouldn't take on one that's been a fighting dog but other than that they would be fine. You would be able to tell how the dog responds to people and stuff but like geniuty said she sleeps with my lil girl and lets her pull all on her and everything we had her since she was three months tho

I think that's it right there. Getting one as a pup so you can raise it up proper.

It's sad though, all these animal shelters filled with pits. It would be really nice to give an unwanted dog a good home, but you run the risk of adopting other people's bad training and neglect.

I used to volunteer at a no kill shelter in New Jersey, and we were over run with pits. These ass holes in Philly would find kittens and stick them in a tube sock and beat on the pits until they bit down on the sock and drew blood. Apparently that was step one in training the pits to fight. That type of dog would be terrible to have around kids.

But you guys are right. For the most part they seem to be good dogs. Just never had my kids around one...yet.

thats right man, if you get one from a shelter you never know what hell it could have been through & what latent psycho resides in its mind, if its around kids & that psycho comes out it could be all over for the child

There was a story on the BBC of a jack russel putting a little girl in hospital. It bit her multiple times out of nowhere so badly the girl needed an ambulance and the owner refused to give her information to anyone so they posted her picture online. Any dog can cause damage to a child.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by damage. Any dog is capable of biting, but not every dog can rip an adults throat out.

Both my dogs are always around kids and I'd trust them more with the kids than I would anyone else. They've been around the kids since they were little. I'd be more concerned with a stranger/casual acquaintance approaching the kids without me present.

Also my boy dog puts his teeth on me playing around and I get the pout face with the ears back and the head all the way down. He feels horrible you can tell he knows it's wrong. You gotta get it into them while they are young.

Yes. Sorry that was insensitive. Pits can certainly cause more damage than a jack russel, didn't mean to come off dickish. I was just more meaning some dog owners are just shit people and it's most the time their actions that allow a dog to do the things they do. I'm very sorry to hear about your friend.

I wouldn't adopt one more than a few months old. Just like people abuse sticks with animals.

I got bit by an otherwise well behaved dog because the owners were all on drugs and the dog was wiggin out because of it.

Also a firm believer that any dog can bite someone. Even a well behaved dog. How they are raised determines if they let go.

I could see the ligaments in my arm when I got bit but that 200lb dog knew it shouldn't have done that immediately and backed up into his house and you could tell he didn't like what he just did. That dog could have killed me in a second and there would be nothing anyone could have done about it.

Rottweiler. The damage it caused was like a scratch compared to what he could have done if he wanted to. He could have snapped my arm in half easily. Dog was giant.

Not a particular fan of that breed :) They are just too damn big. That said I carried one with fucked up hips out of my neighbours house. It was one of the saddest days of my life. Even in the end where snapping at someone would have been justified in her condition she was still as gentle as could be.
