back in the early 90's i had gotten a couple MH ballast's off construction job sites, and i had ripped a hps out of a jewels parking lot.. i miss them old ass lights,, they lasted damn near 20 years but i tossed em wen i went to the digital ballasts... personally i liked the old magnetic better, air cooled no fans, ill be lucky if the new digital ballasts last 10 years.. i already had 2 digital ballasts crap out, both wer not even 2 years old and i think it was the cooling fan,,idk but they just dont build stuff like they used too..i still have a 400 watt magnetic hps ballast i refuse to throw away, its been throu hell n back n still works..its been used as a stool, kicked around, sat in a wet garage, dented, dings, rust, but still works,,im not using it,but its a back up sure fire, if any more of the digitals crap out,,,
You might kick yourself for getting rid of the old mags... turns out they're just what the new 860W CDM lamps need!

For a glimpse of how well they work, I just put up some pics on my thread, link in my signature below. See page 23.

Here is the start of the 10k bulb, I'm installing the bulb tomorrow morning.
I will post pics each week of the process till harvest.
Week 6 - Day 42 flower
I just ordered 2 of these. I had been a big fan of the Hortilux Blue but in my current grow it could not really cover the space I needed so I ended up using HPS nearly the whole time. I ordered these next day so they will be here tomorrow which is day 58 flowering for me. Expecting to go to 65 days so that will give me the last 7 days under these. How did your girls finish for you with this bulb?

I use hps and get extremely noticeable frost 14 days after I flip... I don't wtf you guys are talking about. Get better genetics!
I happen to know that you recently tried (or switched to) organic. I assume you did so out of a desire to better your product. I saw your first attempt...you obviously did not switch because it was easier. There are certainly enough testimonials here from people with every bit the experience you have, that counter the "in-the-box" thinking you, @MrStickyFingers, and others share, to give it credence and for the curious to want to experiment with. But Yes, it is about genetics.

No one is putting mh down Dave I'm simply saying frost will be produced regardless what light is used. Like I said my girls get frosty day 14 using hps.. People don't need to sacrifice yield for frost I get both by running strong high thc strains... I switched to organics because a buddy of mine gave me the whole earth juice line.. I started feeding to late depleted my nutrients and didn't take the breaking down process into consideration.. I'm human Dave .
Pshhhh..

Its not about genetics, if everybody has the same cut, its what light you choose to bring out either yield or quality.

I use hps and I get extremely frosty buds.. I don't know what your talking about.. I'm sorry you have to sacrifice yield for potency and vice versa.. Maybe try a decent yielding high thc strain..

I have high yield & high thc strains. GG4, Loctite. I'm trying to push the numbers higher.

I use HPS too, even i'm trying to refine that for higher ouput and potency.

Why settle for mediocre.. ?

The law of diminishing returns. With relatively little extra effort beyond basic growing, harvesting and curing, a grower can squeeze 95% of a given plant's potential out of it. Extracting the last 5% of awesome-sauce is where the tough work comes in. Some of us are happy with 95%, which is a solid A and not what I could consider mediocre. This conversation is veering quickly, as many do, into The Narcissism of Small Differences. That's my €0.02

I disagree, the same cut that is going around is testing at nearly 30%, but most people are putting up lower numbers. 25%. The 95% you so claim is an imaginary number made up to prove your point. If it can be reproduced, thats a huge number for a person that breaks the plant down for extraction.

It makes no sense to me not to try to improve and unlock the full potential, there clearly is a connoisseur market out there looking closer than ever at the products we produce.

I don't produce a product. I'm my only market. You're right, I'm wrong, I have nothing to add and I make things up. Forget it.

I think you missed Michael's point. He's just pointing out trying to get that last little extra out of a plant...whether it be size or potency or trichomes or whatever. This whole conversation has gone down hill. Specifically, we were talking about flowering with Metal Halide bulbs and it would be nice if we could keep the discussion to just that. I've done a whole grow with a 600 Hortilux Blue. This grow I've done all HPS (for the most part) and will trying a 10K MH for the last 7 days. We're all here just trying to learn from one another and obtain that last 5% that Michael was referring to.

Yeah, sorry I got butthurt, but I totally did.

Let's say that 30% cut makes it to my door, and I can only get 28.5% THC out of it (not that I'm lab testing for my personal stash grows, but hypothetically) - am I going to go build my own custom lighting technology to get that last 5% of potential? Personally, no. That's a sweet spot I can deal with.
The asymptotic 80/20 Power Curve is everywhere, that's probably what I'm really talking about, but I don't know, because this Purple Wreck I grew has me high as fuck.
80% of grows are in the middle
10% of grows are absolute shit
10% of grows are absolutely THE SHIT.

I'll bet if someone studied the quality of output of Cannabis growers on a global scale, the numbers above would be very close to what the results would turn out to be.

Now, about flowering with MH, I'm interested in it, but I haven't seen anything that shows me some amazing difference.

I think mixing spectrums can be beneficial but I don't believe its something everyone will automatically benefit from. It all comes down to how capable the grower is.. Believe me when I tell you someone is pulling better stronger bud then you using only hps.. Someone's pulling better higher yielding crops then me using only mh.. But its not all because of the light, its the skill...

I don't have enough data to draw definitive conclusions but I can share what I've personally seen.

Metal Halide from start to finish vs High Pressure Sodium start to finish:

Bud Density: HPS wins in this category.
Leafiness - Particularly speaking to the meat of the top cola. There seems to be substantially more small leaf activity...those small fat ones with MH vs HPS.
Resin: The MH bulb wins pretty convincingly here.

Running a combo the entire flowering cycle makes a lot of sense to me.
Running HPS up until the last 7 to 10 days also makes a lot of sense to me...which I am currently trying.

Im going to agree. Usually after pre-stretch my flowers already have fake looking glitter over the tops wether i use my hortilux blue or shps. Im not looking for an argument though as ive only had a couple harvest with the hortilux blue, im here to see what else can be done. I do like how my HPS nugs always ends up like rocks after they dry.
