U could shield the roots from light exposure by putting something over the container, like tape or paint. And u can use a fan to give them air. enough questions, on with the experiment.Logic would dictate that most strains wouldn't support such a setup. Would be like starting a tomato seed and expecting it to only grow one tiny little grape tomato. I suppose it could be done if the right genetics were put into play, but even if that were possible, how could you shield the roots from light exposure? Or give them air? Maybe could work better in a small hydro pot setup? Just thinking out loud, here.
