And for those wondering unless you are 100% certain of the mushroom you are harvesting do NOT eat it. The best way to learn about mushrooms is with an experienced mushroom hunter.

I know an old mushroom hunter, walks in my yard pulling up all kinds of stuff at the base of oak trees, calls them sheep's heads or something...and he can have them!
He tells me how great they are...I'll get mine at the grocery store, thanks...

I have helped treat more than one mushroom poisoning in ER. One guy ate amanitas thinking they were those little white generic mushrooms. Called Poison Control and the doctor refused to take it seriously. The only expert for national Poison Control on those and he asked if the doctor wanted him (the expert) to begin the work for the liver transplant he would need or did our doc want to talk to him. That got his attention. Stick to morels and chantrelles. Easy to spot and are delicious. Otherwise bag that.

you scared bro? they're totally safe, and no poisonous look alikes. they only grow in the fall. well in my area of the country that is. look up a picture on google, you will be able to tell. easy to ID. they're actually highly medicinal.

Never seen one but saw a pic. I love mushrooms. In our neck of the woods these don't occur but chanterelles and morels do. I would attack one of those sheep's heads knowing they are safe and tasty.

dude honestly, i ALMOST like them better than morels. chanterelles are tasty, but get lost in the dish very easily if you get heavy with other flavors. i have lots of dried sheep's head, morels, chanterelles from last seasons. gotta save some for the whole year, you know!?
there's a species of oyster mushroom that grows in november/december here by me, and let me tell you.... probably the best mushroom i've ever had. i dont find them often but when i do i get pumped! they love dead maple

You live with a variety of trees around. You are lucky in that regard. In Alaska our one mushroom that is known and in abundance are the boletus. And millions of "magic mushrooms". Millions of them.

honestly, i wish i lived in alaska!! i think i'm gonna do the west side of the upper peninsula of MI though. you guys have to have oyster mushrooms up there. dead big toothed/quaking aspens in the spring (june-july probably for you) and maple should net you some oysters. you have oak trees up there yeah? chanterelles, (hemlock too for those i think by you), and maitake (sheeps head) as well as a few others.
its more about knowing the trees and seasons when hunting mushrooms (i'm sure you know about this already if you hunt morels and chanterelles).
i have yet to eat any boletes. i want to find the king bolete, but i think i'm out of time this year lol. i need to hit the woods and scour up what i can before winter comes.... if it comes, they say it's gonna be mild this year. which makes for shitty morel season in the spring.
