I have never thought of it as welfare. Maybe in a few years when we have collected what we paid in , then at that point I will agree it could be considered welfare. Until then it is just a payback and hope you don't die before the welfare kicks in moment.

It's a PonzI scheme, most people get back far more than they put in and as such it's entirely dependent on new people buying in.

At least a proper pension fund actually invests the funds for a legit return, SS is literally about as welfare as you can get.
