I am not putting 600 watts into the bulb lol . only 400
Well as long as your ballast recognizes the 400w bulb you shouldn't have a problem. If it doesn't have a sensing circuit of some type, you degrade the bulb on every strike and eventuality or potentially it may explode near the end of its life. It will easily burn the house down all because you wanted to skimp on 200 watts

can't you read this

hps & mh.png

There lots of reasons why you would want to dim the bulb,

you get a really not day and need to reduce the temps in the flower room for a short time ( dimming the bulb would fix the problem)

reduce temps in late flower to reduce the thc degrading

you run out of hight in the flower room so you need to turn the light down so you don't bleach the buds

ballast

in a high qualty dimmable 600w ballast, designed for 600, 400w mh/hps or one of the cheap low qualty 600w ballast ?
Mine was a cheap apollo 600 but obviously you were talking about the bulb blowing anyways.
yer it could blow the bulb but its not going to blow up and set fire to the place.
this equipment is very safe to use
if the bulb blows period, it's a fire hazard.

Does anyone ever read manufactures safety Lamp Replacement - Be sure to disconnect the power source before changing lamps. Always use the specified wattage of lamp. (A 400W lamp should not be used in a 600W ballast). and vice versa its a serious accident waiting to happen no matter how you look at it be smart people think safety
like saying is it ok if i plug my balast into a 500 yard length extension cord ???

Imo its a good ideal to buy a high qualty dimmable ballast and have the option to dim the bulb down if you need too
there no risk and its safe

Even if you dim the bulb, the ballast will strike a 600watt bulb thinking its a 1kw bulb(too much startup voltage). The dimming setting only works after the bulb has been striked and warmed up.

Didn't know that, just been dimming my ballast from 600w to 400w, been doing if for the last 5 years, about 4 crops a year never had any problems with exploding bulbs
at least the first week or two in flower.

do you think dimmer able ballast are a gimic and you should never dim a bulb?

The only reason i can see someone using a dimmer is if they can't afford a proper setup or the room design is flawed, hot/light bleaching.

ok so we all know if you have a bigger ballast that can dim like my veg 600 solis tek , ok if you dim a 600 watt mh bulb it changes the color temp and so on and do on . I wanted to save some electric this month . broke recovering from being pretty sick . I put the setting on 400 from 600 with a 400 watt bulb very nice color the bulb did not explode . many people said don't do it ! I said why not will see , any ways I don't suggest doing it unless your a gambler like me . thread was intended for people that always wondered if it was ok or not , I could not find an answer any where on the net .
man do not run a 400 bulb in a 600 a if the dimmer shits itself u are gunna be in a world of shit 2nd i have seen a ballest catch on fire from running diff bulbs in it 3rd i have seen the bulbs burn from the base screw in bit and fall clean out of the holder an burn a hole clean thru the tent and set the carpet on fire
