To be frank, if we're going to be forced to destroy global economics and the ability for the developing world to reach a level of progress comparable to the developed using hydrocarbons, nuclear is the only viable solution to meet the demands, at present.
Wind is an expensive joke, Solar is limited (with hazardous waste products, SiF4 and CdTe are no bueno). Hydro is an option but also limited (and the eco-loons don't like it).
Energy is life, pure and simple. Without it, everything is lost.
