Seedling issues (pics)

yeah, that seed starter stuff works just fine, even for cloning. why would a seedling need watered until runoff? like i said before, just give the little thing a shot of water at the most for the first week or two.

that seed starter soil is made to retain water, just like vermiculite. So you shouldn't even need to water it much after an oz or two every other day or so. where are you at now?

I use nothing but a turkey Baster to water my plants, fill it once with distilled water and "target" feed them since they're so gentle (I just use soil in solo cup...roots organic). Under t5 lights.

Samson,

I'm still around. Still trucking. The seedling pictured died. Yes, it was a little sad and most definitely frustrating. I have another bag seed growing at the moment. I'm almost three weeks in. It's doing fairly well. I recently got a UFO style LED light, so the node spacing is very tight. I guess over-watering is still a problem. Currently, although my new growth looks healthy enough, my first set of true leaves are yellowing and spotting. I don't know if this is from over-watering alone or the possible wasting of nutrients via the flushing action that can occur from watering until runoff. I know it sounds like I have an unhealthy obsession with heavy watering, but it doesn't take much. I use quite a bit of perlite, so the aeration is great, maybe too good.

Anyway, I have some nice genetics coming in the mail. I'm going to be much more conservative with my new batch of babies. Screwing around with bag seed just seems to make the most sense at this stage, you know?

I've heard many people talk about the importance of frequency vs. quantity in terms of watering. Supposedly, the amount of water given isn't really the issue. It's only when you give water too often that you're harming your plants. Now, does this apply only to more established plants? If so, just how established?

Maybe watering until run off is reserved only for those plants that have fully grown into their pots. I suppose it makes sense that with seedlings (or newly potted plants) you'd want to be more conservative with the water as to allow the roots to spread.

I would provide a pic of my seedling if I could, but my phone is messed up. It's yellowing from the bottom up and seems to have stopped growing as quickly. I'm thinking I flushed the soil, depleting most of the nutrients available. I just watered yesterday, but tomorrow I'll probably start giving 1/4 strength nutrients.

If you stuck your seed in good soil (FFOF, Roots, Happy Frog etc...) you don't need to feed your babies with any mutes, it's like feeding an infant a T bone steak. It's too much too soon.

You feed your babies nothing but water for at least 2-3 weeks then 1/4 strength of nutes. I have 4 seedlings in Roots organic soil now (the soil has enough nutes to keep your babies well fed) as a matter of fact I keep them in solo cups for 3 weeks then I transplant to final pot.

Feed your babies every 3-4 days a small amount of water (I use a turkey Baster) under a t5, cfl.

GL with your grow.

Depends, some seed starters are actually a bad product. I hate spagnum and peat based products. They retain water but get hydrophobic really easy. It happens fast. There is a fine line between wet and dry then hydrophobic.

I hear you. My seedling is reaching the three week mark, however. Plus, with all the watering I was doing before, I'm pretty sure I've flushed most of the nutrients.

You are right on with that one, but i was just referring to the miracle gro seed starter shit he was referring to as using.

I actually prefer the Planter's Pride Organic Seedling and Potting Mix.

when he says a small amount, he means like 1 oz of water, 2 max. It's ok if you have a drop or two come out the bottom, but not really necessary.

Runoff isn't necessary until you have been hitting them with nutrients and there is salt build up. Runoff is an easy way to leave your soil dripping out the bottom of your pot if there aren't any roots to keep it in.

:weed:Looks like an old issue you already solved that just burnt out a light at the bottom of your tree sir.

New growth seems tops. Probably pH wackout, light, heat, nitrogen, your change in lighting from germ seedling to veg. But you look fine.

Indeed young ass seedlings require 2 maybe 3 ounces of water before they take off in developing roots then you can start giving a normal feeding with 1/4 strength nutes (if that's your plan).

Saturating the soil on small seedlings is depriving them of needed oxygen.
