Found another email from my friend which you might find useful see below
"about polymer, yes it can keep the nutrient solution or elements in substrate layers because it can absorb too much water abot 300 to 400 times.it can also stabilize PH in substrate.I am using SAP or pottasium acrylate for substrate.currently I am mixing this polymer with chitosan olygomer to improve our plants.chiitosan oligomer is much stronger than pure chitosan and increase the immune system of plant. it can also increase the germination rate and contribute to developing of roots in substrate.before I used anionic polyacrylamid for our plants but anionic polyacrylamid had been made by sodium so sodium is not good in too much rate for tha plants but pottasium polyacrylate is good because it has been made by pottasium in base.SAP and chitosan oilgomer are copolymer.so I am using two copolymers in my substrate that can improve our quality of plants.SAP has a long shelf life about 5 years and biodegradable."
