Cut off big fan leaves the day I started flowering and look..

Cut all the big fan leaves off hoping to stunt them so they didn't grow 5 feet tall. After cutting all the fan leaves (I was told to bend them down) the shoots have gone nuts and now have full canopy of leaves and the bud sites are all now growing.

Using a 250 HPS the light wasn't penetrating any of the shoots. The big fan leaves covered them up.

They're still growing about a foot per week. It's near the end of the first week and 2 grew 11in and one that has always struggled started past 13" from 7" the two main ones are about 2 feet tall now.

Just wanted to share with my results.

So is it safe to say, cutting off all fan leafs should be ok and won't do damage to the plant's growing process during flower?

Leaves don't block light, they absorb it. It is a process called photosynthesis. It is how a plant makes energy and food to grow.
Oh white. I have so much to teach you.... Its the buds that grow the buds not the leaves. The less leaves the bigger the buds. Everyone knows that.

Well yea your right.

Nvgrower, I guess you should follow this advice and cut the rest off. I don't know what I was thinking.

My bad. It was silly to think that leaves are responsible for plant growth.

I guess I will do this in my vegetable garden. I think I'll do it to my apple trees to.

I removed all the fan leaves during flowering stage. Saw some articles about remove all the leaves that block the buds, result bigger buds and don't even need to remove the lower, and they are not popcorn buds. But mine ended up with Small and soft buds.

Someone told me leaves are like solar panel of the plant should never be remove. I'm not disagree with u or anything. Just want to get this clear for myself.

I've been pruning and training my ladies like I do my cherry tomatoes. A bent branch and a pruned leaf stimulate those shoots. But it's a balance. 20160207_192923.jpg

Thats a good idea man. Leaves just get in the way of the fruit. Down with leaves.

Try nipping the main stems that are shooting up too quick rather than defoliate if it's the plants first defoliation.

Lol you really are best off saying nothing about defoliation or pruning on this site buddy just a fee weeks a guy asked the same question and all he got was botanic lesson,

Here they all believe in botany books than practical growers so your answer will never be answered,

tho if you like to defoliate I would suggest doing it from the start her off from vegg and use something to contract the stress with good carbs or sugars for plants.

I found (organic raw honey) works great to reduce the stress of defoliation.. As long as its within reason not full on strip down lol I did that before and not as good results.

Check this link out if your still thinking of defoliation buddy,
http://www.growweedeasy.com/marijuana-defoliation-tutorial

I would advice against it since its in flower and your in first week best to nip she might not like the defoliation unless you have defoliated her in vegg.

Hope it helps and good luck.

You could save a lot of work if you used a chemical defoliant. You could just spray it on the plant and it would know which leaves to take off and which ones to leave. Better gardening through chemistry.

Lots of varying experiences. I guess it comes down the the strain.

As for stressing the plants out the first week of flower. Maybe the first day or two after the cut. But after 4 days it's got bud sites everywhere. And more foliage then before.

Chemical defoliation? Neat, where can I read more? I originally defoliatiated because all the bud zones were being mushed by huge fan leaves and my 250 HPS wasn't penetrating.

And cut them in hopes to stunt them from growing 5ft tall because I don't have the space. DWC is awesome.

I lucked out that I was right about the shoots.
