February 24, 2016—Legalization of Marijuana public forum

On February 24th, we invite you to join us in a discussion on the legalization of marijuana. In its speech from the throne, the government reaffirmed its commitment to legalize marijuana during its mandate. Recent polls suggest that the majority of Canadians support such a move. As Canada moves toward legalization, it is crucial that it is done right. How should marijuana be sold? What steps can be taken to ensure marijuana stays out of the hands of minors? What tools are available to police for those driving under the influence?

To answer these and other questions, we have invited a panel of experts and policy makers to address these and other issues.

Our panel includes:

  • Bill Blair, M.P., Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice
  • Clive Weighill, President, Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP)
  • Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA)
    • Amy Porath-Waller, Ph.D., Director, Research and Policy
    • Rebecca Jesseman, Senior Policy Advisor
  • Benedikt Fischer, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH)


This meeting will take place:

Wednesday, February 24th
9:30am – 11:30am
Room 160-S, Centre Block
Our discussion is not only open to all parliamentarians, but also to the public, who are welcome to attend in person or follow along and contribute via social media at @LibSenate on Twitter.

Wonder if you can attend by video link or in writing...not everyone lives within spittin' distance of Ottawa...limiting input to a tweet isn't really input...

this is going to be a shit show... once a few conflicting opinions hit the floor all bets will be off, similar to how our house of commons works.

hopefully they get what they want out of this and the public's opinion is taken to heart and weighed for its pros and cons. democracy and all :)

It would be nice to see someone with a little cannabis culture (or at least knowledge) on this board but as with all policies government pass. They never seem to have anyone with actual knowledge of the subject....then they go back and waste more tax dollars to do the same job twice:wall:

Well due to medical conditions and other reasons not all of us can just hop in a car and "drive out" you make it sound so easy. Not to mention I only heard about this 2 days ago, maybe if I had a few weeks to plan the trip.

no room at the inn only hours of this news being out... all booked up..and ya wanna bet not even one person from the public got a seat...

i'd have to agree evilG....what would be wrong with an individual that's actually legal patient on this board....making this panel
someone on the panel that has first hand experience at being a patient...that's maybe articulate and can tell
them what kind of effect their decisions will really have to med patients...
