First I've heard of and a lot of grower's seem to post pictures of their plants with some kind of support.
Could you link me to a resource that backs up this information my own Google-Fu has failed me.

I suppose it could be argued that a ScrOG screen is supporting the plant. I've also seen huge buds that have to be supported so they don't break off the stems. A stiff breeze will also ruffle the leaves enough to allow some light to filter into the lower canopy.
I have heard of but never used a silica ammendment that is supposed to make the stems stronger to help support bigger flowers.
I've had plants falling over after a long germination and 2-3 days after putting a fan on them they were standing at attention. Really, if the issue is whether or not to have a fan on your plants, there shouldn't even be a question...
