Best non air cooled reflector

I'm looking for a replacement for my adjust-a-wings. Im using a single 600w HID, and the adjust-a-wings to me just seem too inefficient. It throws light everywhere. I wanted to get a blockbuster and take out the glass but I think they come with both of the flanges out which means it would be throwing light out of the holes which is more wasted light

Does anyone have a lot of experience with non cooled reflectors? I was looking at the gavitas but their quite expensive as you have to buy the reflector plus the ballast, and the footprint looks like it could be pretty small. I would rather get something a little more focused than a parabolic. i haven't used them, but it looks like they would also be giving off light every which way. I've been looking at the gavitas and those look pretty nice. But I have to watch my heat as I have no dedicated AC unit.

Sorry my fellow grower friend. I think you are worrying to much. If I were you, id ditch the shade altogether and go vert :)
At that point wouldn't I be losing a lot of the light to the ceiling? I haven't fully researched a bare bulb yet, but I suppose I'll do that when i get home from work.

You can get a parabolic vert. There pretty cheap as well as throw a lot of light.
I think that's part of my issue though. Sure these parabolics and open wings throw a lot of light everywhere. But imo it probably isn't efficient. The light spread is huge, the concentration/penetration can't be very good

How big is the space you're trying to fill your plants are only going to absorb so much light if you're trying to get more light to them you might want to go up to a thousand watt. How big is the space or trying to fill and how many plants are you trying to fit

I have a bedroom to work with. But the plant space itself is roughly 4x4. I've been doing 9 plants in about a 3x3 square. I can cut down the number of plants as long as the yield is right. But I just feel like the batwing types are inefficient

Yeah your space is perfect for a vertical parabolic Hood. You'll get evenly throughout the entire 4 by 4 space no need to crowd your plants. And no need for a horizontal bulb because the parabolic hood takes care of the light distribution

Can you tell me a little bit about the vertical vs horizontal bulbs? I see that parabolics have both, but is there a big difference?
.

Not sure, I have only used vert bulbs with parabolic reflectors. Just makes more sense to me.

I had never seen a horizontal bulb used in a parabolic reflector before today, kind of defeats the purpose imo.

Yes I'm not sure they make horizontal hoods lol

gavita.jpg I was looking more along the lines of something like a gavita or possibly a daystar. Something that would have a slightly smaller focused beam of light for better penetration

This is the gavita 600 hortistar i've been looking at. 96% reflective. Can also change the aluminum part after it begins to degrade.

IMO and without a shred of doubt a mirrored Parabolic Umbrella Reflector Hood hands down gets another 25% approx of light out compared to say a cheapish wing reflector.

However and it is a big however , the ones out there have a major design flaw in that they focus the bulbs reflection too high up and not a foot or so below the bulb!! I has to drop the center housing about 5 inches to get it right!

So if the female screw in housing is flush with the inside top of the umbrella it means the reflection of the bulb is unlikely to be full or even partial !! ATM I think they are all light that, doh.
