Everyone has their own receipe for soils they prefer.....I mixed up a batch (enough to fill six 5 gallon buckets) using **approximately** 1/3 soil from farm field, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 perlite. I am happy with the outcome I have achieved so far (5-6 weeks flowering remains).

You may want to try something simple like that and see what you think. Gravel could be used as drainage in the bottom of the container. Guan added later as a fertilizer.

Good luck.

346ss..... You are going to get a hundred perfect receipes for this mix, from a hundred different growers. What we all will basically tell you, is to shoot for a light fluffy mix, that hold some water, but also drains well.
.
So let me recommend, 30 percent nice soil, 25 percent peat moss, 25 percent compost (which I did not see on the list) - 10 percent vermiculite, 10 percent pertilite. If you use more than 10 percent of the last two, they will float upwards - if watered heavily.
.
Leave out the gravel, then add one cup of guano & four cups of worm castings (which I did not see on the list) to each five gallons of finished mix. The reason I say wait to add these until afterwards, is to prevent wasting them.
.
Hope this helps.....

346ss ... I have never gotten a bag with flies, that is not normal. But the good news is, it really will not hurt anything - provided they are just ole run of the mill house flies.
.
If they are gnats, put the bag into a large black trash bag, tie it closed & sit it in the sun for a couple of days. It will get so hot, it will kill them all.
.
Death to gnats, they damage roots and annoy me in general.

gnats are buggers, true that, i've had luck with puttin an inch of perlite on the top of my pots since the soil isn't used by the roots, when i scooped out the perlite the roots were right under it, perfect, but as ohsogreen says, every gardener has different recipes
