New Kind of Pro Mix - is this any good for short season outdoors?

I thought this might be really good to use outdoors this summer. Then I see that it contains some slow release ferts that can last up to 9 months. So I don't know if this would be okay in my short 4 month grow season. Would this still be good to use? Anyone tried it? It's a new general purpose pro mix with myco active as an additive and a few other things. Would I add anything to it?

the bx will hold more water,an for longer than hp,helps if u growing out door.i have used the all purpose the ferts init seem to flush out quite fast.its holds a ton of water ,not much perlite in it I have only used it out door

Thank you very much for that info thumper60! Outdoor is what I want to do! You're saying that the new kind of pro mix with the 9 months of ferts in it flush out quick and that it can hold water too. But is that to much ferts to use if I only have a four month outdoor season? The BX is certainly a good option. The new stuff is half the price of the BX though which is another thing to consider.

I c that new stuff, well its not brand new I have been using few years,lowes-homedepot 13.99.theres less perlite more small wood bits,i cant seem to run plant more than a month without starting ferts.it may have 9 months of ferts for something,not for what we growing,i like it out door. in door bx all the way for meshort season for me to pine tree state

I have used the ProMix BX with good results the past 3-4 years in conjunction with Botanicare Nutrients. I have not used any kind of mix with time release nutrients (like Scotts or other commercial potting soil); I have seen many postings stating to NOT USE a soil with time released fertilizers in them but cannot vouch from personal experience.

One thing about ProMix BX- you have to feed evert two weeks; this medium will not hold nutes for a longer period of time.

most growers want full control of their garden, this includes the nutes given, why we don't like anything time released/water activated

I used some of that for a couple of rounds last winter (couldn't find any Pro-Mix BX at the time) and didn't like it. Whatever ferts they throw in is not very good and the consistency of the mix is off, doesn't hold water as well. Went right back to the Pro-Mix mixed with triple mix.

Hey there. I just bought a bag of pro-mix hp and botanicare pure blend pro for veg and one for flower. My hydro guy suggested the set up as I'll be starting my second grow soon.
Any advice on using the system? He said I'd only need the two types.

doesn't hold water well?just the opposite of what I saw,mine had less perlite more ground up wood held more wateri have gone thur quite a bit maybe different parts of country get different mixthe bale that buckets showed is a little different from the bales I get same wording different cover

Those are the nutes I use. I would recommend a LONG transition from Veg to Flower after your plants start flowering; I have done a two and then three transitional feedings (50% veg, 50% flower) the past two years and I still end up with a N deficiency and lots of yellowing leaves a few weeks after the transition period. My hydro guy suggested use a blend of 2 parts flower/1 part bloom during the flowering stage and switch to pure flower during the last month. Also, he (and many others on this site, not looking to start anything) says to no flush at the end- keep using the nutes right up to harvest date. His analogy: "You don't stop feeding a pig two weeks before you butcher him in the hopes the pork will taste better"

Lol. No you don't. But as it was explained to me, the yellowing of the leaves is the plant using up its resources as it ends it life. Thats a good thing?
Anyway the guy told me to keep the veg up for the first two weeks after the flip but you're saying go even longer.
Do you test ph etc? The guy told me no need for any of it. Also I live in a large city in Ontario and he said our water is hard enough that I'll never need cal mag. Is that possible?

I have been running botanicare for a bit,i just run grow all the thur,side dress for p.cut back on the grow as they mature,it works very well with pro-mix

Should have said compared to the Pro-Mix BX which is what I've normally been using. I found it dried out faster, also didn't like the fact that it has slow release ferts but no details on what or analysis.

I'm in NE US. Most stores that sell it sell 2cuft of BX for about 20. I'm just going to buy some peat and mix peralite, lime, and add time release tomato fert to it probably. If I can find a place that doesn't want ~$38 for a bale, that's my backup plan.

Buying a promix with lots of slow release in it - such as the one I showed in the very first comment I wrote at the top of this thread where it includes 9 months of slow release ferts...not a good idea I don't think so maybe I will cancel that one. I may have to use the default which is pro mix BX. There are some other bags of pro mix that have new stuff available at canadian tire (store). I may have to ask if I can special order some into the store nearest my location. I'll come back later today and post some links of the special new ones that I am referring to. The purpose for me will be outdoor growing.

I've never used Pro mix, always make my own soil mix. But I do use lots of time release ferts in my patches. I'm looking at running about 70 plants, so there will be no way I can be out there feeding every couple of weeks. But from now on, I will wait until I put the plants in before I add the time release to the holes. Last week I had 18 holes underwater, so all the time release just released.
