A candidate for the Conservative Party leadership says she would re-criminalize recreational marijuana use if elected prime minister.

Tory MP Kellie Leitch shared her perspective on pot during a wide-ranging interview with AM980's Andrew Lawton Tuesday. She suggested her experience as a pediatric surgeon has convinced her that the Liberal government's plan to legalize the drug will put children at risk.

"With regards to marijuana, I feel strongly about this," she said. "We know this is a dangerous drug that has a huge impact on the developing child brain and adolescent brain."

Leitch said pot should be available to those who use it medicinally, but it should be "in a pharmacy and provided by a prescription." Full legalization will only make pot more accessible to young people, she suggested.

"I don't want to see any child put in harm's way by having access to a dangerous drug," she said.

Liberals have pledged to table legislation to legalize marijuana in spring 2017. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has long argued that regulating and taxing the drug will do more to keep it away from kids.

Lawton then pressed the former cabinet minister if she would "campaign to make it criminal once again." She ducked the question by pointing out the millions of dollars Health Canada spends telling young Canadians not to smoke cigarettes — despite the government saying smoking pot should be "allowable."

"I can't do the math on that very easily," Leitch said. "I think we should be talking to young Canadians about not smoking either of these things."

Lawton then said he was looking for a direct answer.

"Would you criminalize recreational marijuana once again as prime minister?" he asked.

"Yes," she said.

I mean, as a pediatric surgeon she must have worked with TONS of patients on cannabis................oh wait. Proof once again that a medical degree and education which didnt cover cannabis, somehow makes these people think they're experts now that legalization is on the way.

She just looks like a miserable person, seriously that face screams I hate my life.

Thousands of families are moving to Colorado specifically to get legal access to the drug that HELPS their children with diseases from Crohn's to epilepsy.

That drug is so dangerous that if you ate a whole meal of it, you might get really high.

An estimated LD50 (the lethal dose for half the population) multiple of 40,000 times the standard dose. Fuck, that's higher than WATER.

...And if she's that stupid about the safety and efficacy of Cannabis for serious health conditions for children, maybe she shouldn't be practicing medicine at all, let alone pediatrics.

Here we go FUCK THE CHILDREN, you're kids are already high on sugar wheats, the drink box. pop, sugar snack you sent them to skool with. You have already done more damage to your kid with shitty diet and detergents, home cleaning products that weed ever could. Your kids are already high and can get weed faster then you can.

But but lets not worry about alcohol which is in majority of houses and is a true gateway drug. After all if daddy can have two beers after work so can Jane and Johnny Canuck after school.

The letter writers say Dr. Leitch has a duty to influence her Conservative colleagues to pull the plug on a sector they say will spread deadly disease in poorer countries.

The Conservative Party is the only federal party that supports the asbestos industry.

“We understand that doing the right thing may run counter to your political interests,” reads the letter from Canadian and international signatories as well as more than 20 organizations.

“However, your ethical code of conduct as a medical doctor requires that you put the protection of health ahead of personal advantage, no matter what the circumstance.”

The newly elected MP for the central Ontario riding of Simcoe–Grey was a star candidate for the Conservatives in the last federal election.

Dr. Leitch was an associate professor of surgery at the University of Toronto and earned the Order of Ontario for her medical contributions – particularly for her work in children's health.

Her office said Dr. Leitch was travelling Thursday and was not immediately available to comment.

The Conservatives – led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper – have been vocal supporters of Canada's asbestos industry, which ships the vast majority of its product to poorer nations.

The Tories have long maintained that Canada's chrysotile asbestos is safe when handled properly.

But the letter's signatories, including physicians from prestigious universities such as Harvard and Columbia, argue there are no regulations in poorer countries to protect people from the harmful effects of the hazardous substance.

“These double standards are just really unethical,” said signatory Gilles Paradis, a professor of medicine at McGill University and the science editor for the Canadian Journal of Public Health.

“It's an easy thing to do for governments because it's a no-lose situation for them because they can be seen as defending Canadian jobs... and the disease, disabilities, the deaths that result from the use of asbestos occur far away.”

The letter also notes the federal government has spent millions of dollars to remove asbestos from Canadian buildings in order to protect lives – including around the House of Commons.

It notes that the Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Public Health Association and World Health Organization have all called for the use of asbestos to be stopped.

“The question is: Does this responsibility stop at our borders?” Dr. Paradis asked.

The letter was sent while the Quebec government is trying to decide whether to back a bank loan to revive one of Canada's last remaining asbestos mines – a project proponents say would create 500 jobs in the town of Asbestos.

The country's only other operation is in Thetford Mines, about 90 kilometres from Asbestos.

Mr. Harper voiced his support for the industry on a campaign stop in the region – represented by his Quebec lieutenant Christian Paradis – before the spring election. The Prime Minister also spent Quebec's St-Jean-Baptiste Day holiday there in June."

But she's defending Canada's refusal to fund any aid projects that might help the victims of such barbaric practices obtain abortions.

Leitch, who was at the United Nations on Friday to celebrate the UN's International Day of the Girl, told The Canadian Press that Canada needs to target its aid efforts and has chosen to focus on pre- and post-partum maternal and child health.

As a pediatric surgeon, she said she's confident Canada has chosen to target its aid where it will do the most good.

"We have to pick a targeted area, where we're going to be able to have an impact," Leitch said in a phone interview from New York.

"As a physician, I'm very confident in saying that we have chosen the right one, that pre- and post-partum care is the place where we'll have the most meaningful impact to save the lives of children and their mothers."

She noted that childbirth is one of the leading causes of death among young women between the ages of 15 and 19 and blamed that largely on the appalling conditions in which they're frequently forced to give birth.

Leitch estimated that Canada's focus on ensuring women have a clean and safe environment in which to give birth has so far saved the lives of more than 64,000 mothers and as many as 1.3 million children under the age of five.

"These are very, very meaningful numbers."

She did not directly respond when asked repeatedly why the government refuses to consider abortion as an option for pre-partum care in the case of child brides or war rape victims.

Even some anti-abortion activists and religious groups are prepared to make exceptions for victims of rape and incest or when the mother's life is in serious jeopardy."

Most of us can easily see why the conservative's would back this kind of environmental nightmare.
either way adults or kids...asbestos (chrysotile) is a dangerous rock/mineral (and should probably be left alone in the ground), that still has plenty of uses, and I doubt that anytime soon they will stop mining it,completely.

As long as there is a need for fireproof /resistant surfaces,there will be a need to mine this mineral/rock.
I can see why they would want to reduce the number of operating mines, to the bare minimum,because this rock has the potential to make you very sick.

I dropped my daughter off this morning at high school and just in front
of the school parked on the grass was an older volks jetta with 2 kids hotboxing!
sun was shinning into the windows and smoke billowing.
you'd think they'd spend more time regulating stupidity
