We've got an upcoming client that's buying 160 units so I'm guessing it's catching on. Market adaption doesn't happen over night. Hell I've had a couple of customers call and tell me how impressed they are and that they love that it's white light. I.E. they where surprised lol. Talk about not doing your homework.

I just have a hard time believing that. The ROI is not very good on COBS over DE currently. Any good grower can get amazing results under DE for less than COB.
I love COB, ROI isnt there. a few years COB will dominate when prices are down.
Would love to see some proof of this as anyone can say anything here.
I mainly just see alot of COB vendors here saying so much about how good they are which is very true, but we all forget ROI and investors.
Would like to see your numbers on 20,000w of LED vs DE ROI. Have run the numbers with a local LP and DE wins by many years.
Would rather not make thisthread all about DE vs COB as its supposed to be about PPFD.
Would still love to see a side by side of 600 vs 800. Results speak for themselves, numbers dont mean much unless the results are comparable.
 
What's a comparable cxb wattage to a gavita? 750w? An extra 90kwh a month on 12/12 is $10.8 at $.12 kwh. EU is double/triple this. I believe most of the NE us is around $.20 also. Electrical savings alone should pay for added startup within a few years.

What's the maintenance costs of a gavita? How often you need to replace bulbs?

And how much should we add in for personal stress costs? Because my DE is a warm motherfucker...........

If your in an area where electric is high as hell then yes COBS are a very good idea however in America and Canada and Commercial growers get cheaper prices so again COBS ROI isnt there.
Also COBS will last 3-6 years.
So sure you will have to replace the DE bulb every 2 years,but when you have to replace a WHOLE WAREHOUSE of COBS, thats another huge investment.
Lets say 130 per DE light to replace, but many many many COBS need replaced.
Again COBS are bad for ROI.
There is no arguing ROI on COBS currently. Price is too high currently for ROI over DE.
Once COBS come way down its all over for sure for DE and Any other lighting system, but until then DE wins for ROI.
Please show me a warehouse full of COBS, not just some small timr lighting builder claiming without proof to advert his product even more.
I am all for COBS over DE IF price is down due to ROI.
Electric is not as expensive as COB builders make it out to be.
In a warehouse you dont need AC but youll need heat thats for sure.
Anyways, Im finished debating this.
Lets keep this thread on topic of PPFD vs yield.

As for heat, still cheaper for DE room with AC than a COB room with heat factoring in ROI and startup costs of a 20kw room.
Have run the numbers myself as well with a LP.
COB is just too expensive for commercial at this point. In a few years if COBS come way down then DE is killed, but until then DE wins for ROI and commercial.
If someone can prove me wrong please do, but myself and a LP in Canada cannot see it.
(LP plans on 200million in profits this time next year, no small time grower they are).

Well, cobs are cheaper in bulk too. If you're commercial, buy components in bulk and have your electrician/maintenance guy put em together. Should be able to outfit your setup for $1/watt currently. You probably got an electrician on hand just watching the lights come on and off anyway, make him earn that paycheck. That brings it down to 2 years or less for ROI for additional startup.


Driving below nominal increases lifespan. At nominal they hit 70% output at 50,000 hours or 11 years.

Your forgetting Certification.producers for commercial must use certified equipment so again they would need to buy either from PLC or Johnson or Tasty or one of the others. So again ROI isnt there.

Have seen LEDs blow before, so again this is theory. No one has ever ran a COB for 11years.
