What's the most you vegged under a 400w

I know there's a rule 100w per plant or 100 plus 50w for each additional plant but what is the most u have grown under a 400 w and what was the harvest like? I'm trying to get a perpetual grow going with as many small plants as possible

I did 9 six gallon buckets, 12/12FS under a 400 when I first started out, years ago. I wasn't impressed. Go for smaller count + longer veg. A 400 can cover a 3x3 space just fine, anything more and you will be dealing with fluffly buds.

I'm doing 12 1 gallons various strains I want to try they are all reg seeds so I will cull all males I'm just trying to see If my plants will grow good until they show sex

If you're just vegging till they show sex and not attempting to flower then you could get away with 12 1 gallons under a 400w, I wouldn't let them get much bigger than that though

Yeah I will just be vegging til they show sex I'm hoping for 6-8 2 ft plants to flower under another 400 w will 6-8 small plants flower fine under 400w as well?

"Most" would be over 60 but then I remove most during veg already. Most I actually vegged till maturity (so I can determine sex) is 35, from reg seed, most males are removed leaving about half, of which I end up flowering 9-16 including 2-3 males that are removed later on.

About 22 left:

That's on 4x4, under 400w hpi-t plus, which is an mh bulb with output similar to the 315cmh but with uv. Nearly all in roughly 0.5 gallon pots.

There's no rule that dictates wattage per plant. That would in any case still depend a lot on how large those plants are.

400watt hps is usually good for 3x3'. You can veg as many plants as you can fit, which depends a lot on the variety you grow and how long you veg as well. With single cola short (afghanica) plants 16 works nice. With taller more stretchy plants a lower amount is more practical.

2x2 is only 4, 3x3 gives 9 plants evenly spread on a square space so when growing for yield that is a common number. I used to do fine sticking to 5 plants though, 1 in the middle.

i'm flowering under a 400 right now and it pretty much supports 3 decent sized plants, in 2 gallon smart pots, i could physically cram a couple more plants in there but then at least two of them would be getting shitty coverage. if you stick to SOG small plants you could probly get 6 in the same area, but again, more would put the ones around the outside at least partially out of good coverage.
and from playing with a cheap lux meter, i've figured out the footprint of the light, i rotate all three daily so each one gets its day in the sweet spot. i left one there for a long time before i figured it out and its noticeably more developed than the other 2, which have begun to catch up well since i started rotating them daily.

I usually do pot up the ones I flower, to 1.7 gallon pots and sometimes 3 gallon pots. During transition when they can still fill the pot with roots. Big plants in small pots in soil is tricky. Ideally, when growing for yield but also for convenience, pretty much the entire floor is filled with square pots. Common combination for tent and closet growers in NL is 9 pots of 11liter (nearly 3 gallon) under 1kw. With 1kw they transpire more and need a larger water and nutrient buffer, with 600w 9 x 2-gallon pots is more common.
