You only need a few. I went over board with 12 in a 4x4. But 5-6 would be great. Use either a small heatsink from heatsinkusa.com or 1-1/4" square tubing from stevesleds.com
cool conversion trick right there. i'll keep it in mind for sure. turned it up to 30' today and all looking good. man you gotta just love these lights, im insanely impressed. was gonna buy like a solarflare or something but i saw the mau5 on the tube and you know seemed complicated and all.. so i jumped on the DIY train when the cutter thing came along...i tell you, it aint any hard at all to piece the components together. and the resulting light is just incredible, there is no comparison to my old cheap LED. hard thing gotta be like planning the system out and what not. so...i didnt have to do that now and that's pretty cool.You'll hear a lot of conversion factors for lux to ppfd. But the simplest for me for warm cobs is lux in thousands times 15 equals ppfd. So 50k lux is 750 ppfd. 40k lux is 600 ppfd. You can experiment with panel height vs strength vs uniformity of lux readings. I haven't had a strain yet that doesn't like 750 ppfd...just my experience. Also 40k lux or 600 ppfd has been very productive for me as well.
I too wasted good money on a cheap blurple led. Was going back to my tried and true hps when I found all the chatter here on warm cobs. The last 3 grows under 3500k cobs have been the best ever. The hype is real for warm cobs.
yeah i see it now. cool tech. no, the lord provided them with 30000 lux today, try maybe 35000 tomorrow. look fine so far. speaking of cheap LEDs, i see ppl on here suggesting other ideas for a package and im thinking i love my lights but wouldnt mind buying maybe some cheaper ones too. for veg and all.
This is weird...These are the numbers at Tj=50C to the best of my knowledge, using Supraspl's spreadsheets and Citizen simulator. Notice the switch to CLU048-1212, that was the $12 cob being discussed above:
I see where you're going...dialing it up slow on the intensity and see how they like it. I don't think you can go wrong with the gm5 kit. If I hadn't built last year I'd be looking hard at them.

I bought series 30 (30mm) 80/20 extrusions 4ft each for $4 per stick from firgelli automations. After shipping it was close to $2/ft. They had 1000 ft worth on clearance for the past 2 months. Not sure if it's still avail.
