The use of nuclear weapons was necessary to bring about a speedy end to the war, but it is tragic that civilians die in war even if they may never pick up a gun most of the time.

That's the popular mythology anyway, but I don't think it's accurate, nor was it a good thing.

If you or I had a grudge against somebody and in order to kill them we blew up a house which included people that we had no quarrel with, would we be guilty of a crime ?
