Will this work? Fan ducting reducer thoughts.

Hi folks,

I have a 3 x 3 x 6 tent. LED Lighting and want to scrub my air clean of odor. Smell is my main concern.

A 4" mountain air at 195cfm is all i should need, but I was interested in a Higher CFM fan using a reducer to exhaust. I have 4 inch duct work going out my chimney and would need to reduce the hyper fan 6 to a 4 inch in and out of the fan. Is this something that would work?

No you need to match the carbon filter with the fan speed. You can reduce after the 6" fan to 4" to exhaust it

So the carbon filter needs to be 6 inch to work properly. Was thinking of turning the fan down 50 percent to get around 155cfm

Yes it has to do with the contact time and air speed a controller is fine but if the controller goes out and is stuck on full speed now you are not filtering the air correctly because you have to much air movement for the filter

Its fine. Use reducers and then out a variac (speed controller) on the fan and slow it down.

That fan is over kill anyways.

I do however reccomend getting the biggest filter possible no matter the size fan. You can never go too big on a filter.

Match your fan to the grow area. Put the biggest filter you can on the filter. The only reason companies want you to match the filter to the fan is so you have to replace them more often.

The larger the filter the more surface area you have. The air moves slower over the carbon and scrubbed better.

It will last longer to.

You could just set it up to do an in room scrub if smell is the only concern. Then there is no need to duct out of the room and you can run a nice and effective 6" fan setup with a good 6" filter. Whitebb2727 is correct also on the surface area of the filter and its effectiveness.

You need to exchange the air once every three minutes.

3x3x6=54. 54÷3=18. You need a whole 18 cfm for your tent.

But going with a hyper fan 6 and 6 inch filter , setting the fan to low would be fine. Gives me lots to work with. Or should I just save my money and get the 4 inch mountain air. Appreciate the help

The four inch mountain air is going to be way better than any generic filter.


If you can get the fan cheap get a 6 or 8 inch phresh filter.

Just talked to my local store. Gave me a deal for a hyper fan 6 and 6 inch mountain air. Comes to the same price as a 4 inch fan 4 inch filter and a variac together. May as well go with the 6 inch and have a super scrubber rather than a 4 inch and worry about odor. Thanks for the help. My main concern is odor so like you said, the more surface the better. Thanks everyone. I'll just run it at 40 percent

Sounds like a plan.

Might be able to run it lower than 40%.

Set it up and play around with it.

I can also show you how to disassemble and refill that filter when the time comes.

I got a 16 pound bag of the same carbon that phresh uses for $90 shipped to me.

Its enough to refill four, 4 inch filters.
