Tested canola oil and Dawn on aphids tonight

They were aphids as they are a light green color. On the stems and also under the leaves. As a relative newbie - I violated Rule #1 which is never buy Teen clones or any clones.

I have tried Neem Py which is which is also called Fert-Lome because the MMJ supply store said it was good. I also tried the HD version of Neem oil which is not 100% Neem.. Neither seemed to be totally effective.

I saw this video about Canola oil. He said on tougher problems add some dish soap like Dawn, So I got 16 ozs of Canola oil from Wal Mart for $1.00. It was pure Canola oil. The big bottle about 32 ozs is $2.48. I had a $1.00 small bottle of regular Dawn from Office Depot.

The video says you can use it for spider mites. I figured it would also kill aphids. I put about 3 oz of Canola Oil in a 1 gallon sprayer and over a tsp full of Dawn. The video used a cup which looked liked 4 to 5 ozs. I maybe should have used less.

The high pressure hose mixed up the solution and the oil did not separate. The lights had been off a half hour around 11 pm. I sprayed the undersides of the leaves, stems and top sides of the leaves. I drenched the plants. The few aphids I saw were not enjoying it.

My guess is the solution will probably suffocate the aphids. I doubt they will get that greasy Canola oil off.

My plan in the morning is to spray the top of the leaves with straight water. I am curious if it works as well for spider mites as the guy says but I am hoping I do not get spider mites. I am also hoping the oily/soapy solution does not harm the plants. The few that I really sprayed hard, I was considering cutting down.

The leaves has a sheen and I hope the solution does not harm the plants. 2 were in late veg and the other was just in flower.

Insects breathe through their skin which is why soap works on aphids. It also works on juvenile mites but not adults. You need a miticide for that. Aphids can be knocked off with a stream of water also.

It seems to have worked well. I think the greasy oil and soap drown or suffocate them. These are aphids. I am not sure if the oil is greasy enough to stay around and kill the eggs. It is a cheap option but not ideal. The plants held up fine and I drenched them.

Make sure to rinse them off well after. I'm sure you did. I was warned about using soap on the ladies. I've been treating white flies on a hibiscus with Neem oil and dish soap. My guru was concerned even using 4 drops.

with total disregard of the plants stomata

good luck
Don't taze me bro.

I was in the MMJ supply store today and looking at a Mitecide mite killer product that is fairly well know. The product was 70%+ Canola oil. I left it on for about 5 hours lights off then spray in the morning with water. The plants are looking much better and healthier today.

This web site has a lot of helpful people especially the guys talking DIY COB LED's like GrowMau5. What would you have done?
