unfortunately i don't think i can afford to purchase a new t5 setup, they're all about $130 which isn't bad but i can't spend that much right now. all this makes sense with the topping and stretching stuff.

i think i'm just gunna stick it out w/ the current setup as best i can, probably getting some tomato cages. hoping for the best

You no doubt can stick with your setup now, Just make sure you are running said bulb for said ballast. Top every node you see and manipulate them so they grow bushy. The node lengths are what you want to look for. The tighter, the bigger the buds.

Go to Costco and get 2 of the led shop lights. they work great for veg. each fixture has 2 led bars and costs $25. I just grabbed some myself to veg plants in my breeding tent.

They would become extremely top heavy. He's also using HPS for veg and not getting very tight node lengths. You don't agree?

All plants become top heavy. I scrog or stake my plants. If I didn't they would fall over. he can tie branches down, super crop, stake, scrog, or use tomato cages

alien rift half day 33 under 335 watts of cob led. this is in an 18 gal sub irrigated planter with living soil..

Yes, 1 plant in an 18gal container with a scrog setup is nice. However he is running a 1000w HPS with a 6x6 footprint and 4ft of light penetration...it's over kill.

His electric bill will be more than what he pulls in the end. Training the plant (LST and such) is just going to prolong the inevitable of a long lanky plant.

so even w/ 600w ballast you think the electricity bill will be high enough to not be worth it compared to yield?
Only because of the how the plant's look now, and your lack of knowledge with LST, SCROG and TOPPING. You could manipulate them to be substantially large and get a bang for your buck out of the 600w. However, I'm a firm believe in the fact that light penetration only goes so far. Hence, Go three feet down from the top of your plant...and everything else is useless popcorn and just taking energy away from the top of your plant.

this all makes sense, kinda bummed though, not ready to invest in another light setup but not sure this grow will turn out to be worth it

based on how they look now, how much longer you think i should veg?
You veg to create nodes (more places for flowers to bloom) However you could veg into a monster but you are limited to the penetration of your light. The amount of lumens is crucial as you get further away from the light source. They diminish tremendously.

so my best bet at this point would be to put some tomato cages around them and veg for a few more weeks just to learn and have fun. 600w light gunna run my electricity up big time?

Not nearly as much as when I thought you were using a 1000w. Depends on where you live, price per KW and such. You might have peak hours, that I don't know. Yes, Grab some cages, top the plants, tie them. You want to create as many "New Branches" as possible. YouTube is great tool at seeing how people actually do things. Google terms you see and search for videos pertaining to them.
