We were just like that before we became conscious. I like consciousness, it has its advantages. For example we're going to have to figure a way off this planet eventually, and it's not going to be a horse or a dolphin who comes up with how to do this. Humans will, and we'll likely take many hundreds of species with us. You're welcome, animals...
