CFL's

I was being nice, its pretty obvious by your response you were being a douche after i corrected you. That metaphor has ABSOLUTELY no relevance to grow lights, is all im saying. 400w is just the power pulled from the wall, dont forget about the rest of the equation on the output side of the circuit.
I was just trying to make a point and you told me I didn't make sense lol. I don't even want to argue about nonsense. it's all good! I'm sure you know more about the output than I do. I'm hitting some pineapple express as we bitch about lights bongsmilie

Read your own post once more, you directly quoted my post like your supposed to be right with something irrelevant? Like what i said dont make sense? Am i not allowed to return the favor with truth for your future advantage?

Enjoy the pine express though, its a lovely day today. Can't wait to get home myself and get lost in some chemdawg.

Okay, you said it costs more to run cfls than hid. I said that is like saying 400 lbs feathers is equiv. to 400lbs of brick(sorry it's irrelevant); meaning that it costs the same amount of actual watts used either way you look at it.

I figured that cfls pulling 400 actual watts to an hid pulling 400 actual watts is the same cost to run per hour. But, I guess in some crazy, mathematical way, I am wrong?
I've never tried that strain before myself.

I see the confusion, you didn't factor in the return and flowering time. When growing, you look at monthly expenses compared to your return. Which is cheaper to do with an HID over cfl's assuming equal draw from the wall.

Are you just taking it out of context to stir the pot?

So then, as a grow newbie. What set up could I purchase for relatively cheap ( HID ) that will be good for say a 4 foot by 4 foot range that is growing lets say 4 plants. not a lot I know, but I think that I should master I few before I do a lot

As I am using CFL's to grow ( I know that its not the best way to grow) and I have an 85watt 5500k cfl. Can I use this ? will it be beneficial in anyway ?
You can DIY a grow light from spirals ... I built one like this one and it works well.

The more the better ... They are long lasting , low heat and can be mixed with various bulbs. ( 2700k / 5000k / 6400k ). I plan to expand this 12 bulb unit into a new build with 20 bulb.
Like this one .....

These work extremely well , no matter what some say. I chose to make something better than using T5 or long tube lights.

Cob/led/315 lec would be considered a few of the more efficient types of grow lights.
You can grow with almost anything within the spectrum bro, but i would try a couple grows before diving into more efficient lights just incase you decide growing isnt for you that way you dont get stuck with grow lights, totally up to you though.
If you could get more product with less power pulled from the wall without going past your budget then i would go for it as long as your environment has the capabilities for whatever your game plan is.
8 ounces from a 400mh is decent, 8 ounces from 400w of compact fluorescents is very very sketchy but probably not impossible with a very high maintenance room.

Yeah, I can't argue with you there! I wasn't taking all of that into consideration; just the actual wattage per hour. So yes it would be cheaper to run hid and finish sooner. And to answer your question, I do tend to stir the pot quite often, but I wasn't trying to be a dick this time. Happy growing

Gotcha, I thought he was talking like ballast like the HID has. I don't know...you know this make me want to bust out my CFL for a grow or so and see how it does.
All gas discharge bulbs require a ballast, small bulb = small ballast. Some cfl's are rated at the input draw, some are rated at the ballast output depending on brand ect. (kind of how a 1000w HPS is rated 1kw from the ballast output side but pulls closer to 1070+w at the wall) so it gets tricky to get an actual number but its not like it matters much with cfls anyway.
You should pull out the cfl, its still fun to grow with them if you have the time!
Can you really keep a HF 125w cfl "right next" to your plant though? Or were you talking about the 23/40 watters?

I have a single big 125W CFL bulb and I can keep it right next to the plant no heat issues. It's great for my seedlings and keeps the tent pretty cool too. I want to do a scrog with it because I'm convinced I could get the gram per watt with it if I grew a single plant in a five gallon smart pot and LST'd and scrogged the hell out of it. Pretty bright light for a single bulb and has an all white reflector, pretty nice imo.

Try it out bro! If you can pull consistent 4 1/2 zips dry with a bulb like that then thats pretty damn good, actually thats really fucking good, but i would imagine synthetic nutes with cash cropper cuts would be needed to come close.

Most def. I've seen a PC grow with 42W CFL get an O dry so I see know reason why I couldn't get close at least triple that with mine. Sadly I haven't the space right now, compared to just using the HPS I have it's no contest at the moment as I've no plans to scrog my current plant.

This is the one I used in the pic.

I also have the six bulb one to.

Durolux has a lot of 2ft and 4ft models. They come with bulbs and you can mix the bulbs when you buy if you note it in the comments.

I have better pics in my thread.

It cost a little more than cfl but people have had good luck with the led house bulbs to.

have you considered the difference in cooling cost? I run T5s in a closed closet with no vent or cooling system. if I was running HIDs I would need a vent, blower and A/C or an evaporative cooler to keep temps below 90 degrees.I also believe that fluorescents produce better tasting buds and I am not alone in that openion

Yes i have, i cant use a t5 in my space without the same 400cfm+ of cooling or its still too hot but manageable if i bump up the room exhaust and shut down the hood exhaust, im sure if i had the fixture in a vented hood it would be much cooler.
i actually bought a pair of pure par & pure blue by agromax last month and still waiting to order a 10k but i haven't had time or space to set up an area for it since im actually in the process of building a new 10x10 room.

Florescent can grow very nice bud, with the right bulbs of course but taste also has alot to do with genetics.
