I just drape a light piece of painters plastic or even a light cotton bed sheet to ward off the frost- of course this keeps the plant only 3-4 degrees warmer than with no covering, so it's only good for the light freezes. Usually all my stakes that are holding up branches keep the material from rubbing up on the cola tips.
Man I wouldn't spray shit on my plants once they're far enough along to have the bud caterpillar be an issue- that would be once the buds are fully developed, or getting pretty close to it- I'd hate to spray anything that will be smoked. I've got the moths flopping around at night now too, but the buds aren't developed enough for them to use, but soon, it'll be a problem... really though, I only lost about an ounce or so last season to the bud caterpillars eating, pissing, and shitting inside colas. So I just except there will be a little bit of loss. I leave my porch light on and periodically smash the fuckers that are attracted to the light, maybe I get a few of em on their way into my garden, before they can fuck up a cola.
Check out this pheno of blackberry trainwreck, it's got deep purple stems and stalk... the entire thing, not just some of the usual purple streaking on some of the stems of fan leaves I've encountered many times in various strains. This entire plant is just different looking... can't wait to see how nice the buds are gonna be

You can see by the color and development of its leaves, that the purpling isn't some kind of deficiency or anything, the plant is vigorous and healthy... just has different coloring on the stems.
